Juniper Berry
A black-blue colored berry that resembles black peppercorns. These berries are native to Europe and America and have a very astringent flavor. Although they are too bitter to eat raw, the crushed dried berry is used to flavor meats, sauces, and stuffings.

The berries are also a key ingredient in flavoring gin.

I've never tried using Juniper berries. There are Juniper bushes all over the place where my mother lives in Arizona. They smell lovely and look very nice as well.

I love to use them in sauerkraut. I just put a small handful in a pan with some sauerkraut heat it up until it turns golden brown, it makes it taste really heavenly (for sauerkraut that is)!

I never knew that juniper berries were used for anything BUT gin. Im a gin girl 200%, nice how I can learn something new from this. The juniper berry has such a strong taste - its definitely an acquired one - but if presented in the right gin, its heaven.

these smell really weird...never knew they were in gin...maybe this is why I don't like gin.
