Our kitchen had a wall with the stove and a small 3-4 ft piece of counter with a cabinet but NO upper cabinets. So, we put in an Ikea Grundtal rail and shelf and it was a lifesaver. Now all of our pots and pans hang from the rail and the shelf has 2 hanging spice racks, hooks to hang pot holders, a cutting board, and mugs, and the top of the shelf has flour/sugar jars, my recipe box, a few cook books, and all of our coffee/tea. I can't even imagine where all this stuff would go without the shelf and rail on the wall. Also, for anyone living in an old house it's key to use anchors with your screws when hanging anything on the wall that needs to support a decent amount of weight like a pot rail, dish rack, etc.
