Get your grill on this weekend with Korean-style beef skewers. This recipe flash marinades strips of tender meat in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, and sesame oil. Don't despair vegetarians: this blend would be great for tofu; simply slide the tofu on in place of the beef.
Scallions and rice cake sticks round out the menu, but feel free to get creative. Mushrooms, bell peppers, broccoli, or red onions would be equally scrumptious. To make this tonight, get the recipe now.
From The Nest
Ingredients
bamboo or metal skewers
1 pound tender beef, such as rib-eye or filet mignon, cut into thin 2-inch-long strips
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon Asian sesame oil
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
5 or 6 green onions, cut into 2-inch lengths
1 package rice cake sticks
Directions
- Soak the short (5- or 6-inch) bamboo skewers in cold water for at least 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile put the beef in a medium bowl, add the soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, sugar, and black pepper, and toss to combine, making sure all the beef is coated with the marinade. Let sit for at least 20 minutes.
- Using 2 parallel skewers, thread the beef, green onions, and rice cakes alternately on the sticks.
- Prepare a medium-hot coal fire or preheat a gas grill to medium. Grill the skewers until the meat is browned on both sides and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes on each side.
Serves 5-6.

Ok...I'll admit I'm asian but....what da heck is a rice cake stick?????
1I had the same question,I have no idea. I like the recipe though so I will just omit that ingredient.
2I made this the other night and it was delicious! Except I left out the rice stick since I had NO idea what they meant--they didn't even use it in their photograph! But I added red bell pepper and used skirt steak. Yum, my guests loved it.
3I'm so confused about the rice cake stick! I'm Asian and you'd think I'd know what that was but I have no idea! Yum, help us out!!
4It's called ddok or Tuk, different english transliterations. Rice cake is a fairly common korean ingredient. It can come in flat ovulets to logs. This type of recips is not very common. Normally ovulets are added to a beef based soup or the logs are used in a spicy street food. It's rather bland like tofu but does a great job of absorbing flavors and adds some nice heft and chewiness to a dish.
5Found the rice cake sticks no problem at the local Shoprite, but now the question is, do you cook them before or grill them with the rest of the ingredients? The recipe does not specify so I'm going to go ahead and assume they are cooked separately.
