Let's Dish: Top Chef 4.4 — Movie Night

What did you think of last night's Top Chef? I was a little bit disappointed that they were working in pairs instead of as individuals, but I guess that's better than in groups. I also really enjoyed the movie theme and thought that was a fun idea. How about you, what were your fave and least fave parts of the episode? BuzzSugar... I think we are the only two that like Andrew. I also think I'm the only one that likes Ryan. I hate Spike's hats, but it's better than seeing that mop that he calls hair. Between him and Manuel, I knew it was going to be Manuel because there was nothing memorable about him or the food he's put out this season. It doesn't surprise me that Richard is dominating this competition and I really wouldn't mind trying his Willy Wonka dish.

I give kudos to the teams who did Willy Wonka, Top Secret and A Christmas Story for creating great representations of the movies in food form. Caterpillar, I think that the girls who did Il Postino didn't do as terrible a job as you thought. I think the idea of a film being about a postman translates well into ravioli, as it, like the parchment cooking menthod you suggest, is an envelope with something in it. My problem with their dish is that it was very Northern Italian . . . but Il Postino is set in Southern Italy. But your right, Caterpillar, they could have used more Chilean influences. And as for the Talk to Her dish . . . it's clear that neither of those girls actually got the movie at all. That's a movie about how men destroy women, and how they are incapable of truly understanding them. They gave us lamb and no Spanish colors. Almodovar would have wept at how sad that dish was. I'm sure it was well-prepared, but just so . . . run of the mill.

party and caterpillar — my thoughts exactly re: Talk to Her! I thought I had to be thinking of the wrong movie, based on their description. But no, it was them, not me. I thought the Christmas Story team was going to completely crash and burn based on their communication issues, so I'm kind of amazed they did so well. Is it wrong to love Andrew? I think he's fantastic. Richard is no doubt talented, but I still want to punch him most of the time. I really thought Spike was going to go, and that it might have been the right decision given that he was really the one in charge of the dish, but Manuel wasn't terribly exciting (and didn't he also rank in the bottom for the quickfire?), so I'm not that upset about him leaving instead. Plus, these shows tend to reward bad leadership before NO leadership, so I suppose it makes sense.

To me, this was the most entertaining episode so far. The film concept was fun. Andrew seems a little nuts. Next week looks intense!

I like that they have to work in teams because that is life in a restaurant. You have to be able to communicate with others and have a great sous chef!

I loved this episode, being a movie buff, but was really disappointed in the lack of true creativity most of the teams could have had with this kind of assignment! The Wonka team- Spot on boys, that movie is all about a magical world where a candy maker invents candy that boggles the mind like “hot ice cream for cold days” “lickable wallpaper” and “square sweets that look round” , wasabi white chocolate sauce was awesome, Dale, Richard and Andrew(who was just frantic) worked well together. Good Morning Vietnam- Spike and Manuel could you get more literal next time? “I make Vietnamese food so a movie with Vietnamese food…..vietnam….vietnam…Good Morning Vietnam! Brilliant!” They could have taken that Movie and done so much more than frikkin fish spring rolls and a blob of swiss chard that looked like a piece of spinach eaten by my cat than coughed up. They could have done, a twist on breakfast foods of Vietnam, or a MRE Vietnamese style, or even a traditional baseball game food with a Vietnamese twist (lots of baseball in that movie) I am glad Manuel left. Talk to Her- They actually saw this movie right? Its about people being gored by bulls, comas, rape, infidelity, prison, still birth. I didn’t see it as an empowering film about passionate women. And I sure as heck didn’t see a rack of lamb and saffron representing it. More like a roasted cow, served along side its own castrated Balls on a bed of weepy wilted lettuce. Zoe wouldn’t know passion if it smacked her in the big crying eyes. And for her to put down another chefs dish because she “knows it didn’t taste good” is just showing her enormous jealousy (her speaking of the willy wonka teams win) I hope her and her girlfriend go home soon. Il Postino- an Italian movie so lets make rustic Italian food? Zzzzzzz, oh wait we already know that Nikki can make her own pasta so instead of doing something creative, she makes….tortellini with ricotta and whatever. The movie takes place in a FISHING VILLAGE! Good gracious that is inspiration right there! It also takes place in Chile, so again another inspiration. A postman deliveres mail in envelopes, and a method of cooking is en Papillote, which is in parchment paper! God, whats wrong with these people? A Christmas Story- I thought it was good, but I would have at least done a dish with TONGUE in it! Question, what is “big boy bubby” ? anyone? Top Secret- which takes place in Germany, I like what dishes they made, but I would have had a bit more fun with it

maggieleigh, I too hate Spike and Andrew= not only are they incredibly annoying, they also seem rude. I was also hoping for a double elimination of Spike and Manuel. Richard and Stephanie seem to be the most talented.

Loved the Wonka team - really creative stuff. As for Andrew and Spike, can both of them go home already? They're so annoying. I like to watch the show for the cooking and creativity, not for how weird someone can be and how cool they think their hats are...

Yeah, I've been over Spike for around 3 weeks. And does Andrew remind anyone else of one of the Beastie Boys? Maybe it's too early to tell, but I think this will be a competition between Richard and Stephanie in the end.

Also, I just have to add that I am so excited to see the fights next week! I have been thinking that these people have been getting along too well together and I was wondering if they'd all blow up at each other eventually!

1. Hate "Spike's" hats. Its like he's trying too hard to be the weird funky one. No one cares Spike as long as you can cook, move on! 2. Dell 3. Both of them were clueless and it was kinda annoying! 4. Yes, if anyone on this show could have it would be him. 5. He's another annoying one who's trying way too hard to be funny and interesting. Just cook already. 6. No, not really, its hard to agree on the same thing and they're pressed for time. Plus unless you have a solid idea of what you want to do you probably dont care if someone else takes the lead. 7. I wanted to eat the Christmas Story one! 8. Sort of, but also liked the Christmas Story dish. 9. Um, yes, and I think he should have considering it was his moronic idea! And Padma was so right, all he wanted to do was make a Vietnamese dish and take the easy way out. And I think he was lying about spending all of their budget. Um, where exactly did the money go? 10. Yup! And the way he says Wasabi! Awesome!

I definitely paid more attention this week than in the previous ones. Maybe this is the ep that draws me in for the rest of the season. I so wanted to try the Willy Wonka dish!

I really thought the Top Secret girls might win, but I'm not surprised that the Wonka team took it. Although, white chocolate wasabi still grosses me out a little bit. I'd be interested to see how it tastes.

i actually liked this episode a bit more than others this season. i like when they are forced to work in teams, and it's great to see the dymanics on how things turn out. i'm really glad that the girls didn't go home (or either of them) so that's the upshot of the episode to me. i have my favorites so far though, and we'll see if i'm right. historically though, if you look back at past seasons (at least 1 &2), the chef that won the first challenge won the whole thing...just food for thought....

When is Ryan going to pack his knives and go? He is so dense. I think Mark is a great cook and pulled that dish together. Spike's hat was pretty ugly. I think that the judges saw that he could really cook and Manuel brought the dish down and I knew he was getting kicked off pretty early. I was really impressed by Richard and Dale in the Quickfire, their dishes were beautiful. Richard is a modern Willy Wonka just with all types of food. I wanted to eat the top secret dish. Yummy!! and I wanted some wasabi white chocolate. Andrew was being so annoying, but what else is new?

I think they were overly hard on the Talk to Her team. Compared to how the others "sold" their food, they didn't do any worse. The judges should have focused more on the food, instead of nitpicking the marketing.
