Let's Dish: What Kind of Turkey Are You Having This Year?

Right now at the office, there are few things that PartySugar and I can talk about besides our Thanksgiving menus. For the first time ever, Party's making a deep-fried turkey, and she can't stop obsessing about it! This year, for some reason, I'm not really feeling Thanksgiving traditions, so I'm mixing it up with a bacon-wrapped, mushroom-filled turkey roulade. And Sugar staffer Alexis is going the classic route, with a buttered, basted, stuffed roast turkey. What kind of bird are you having this year?

This year we will have a traditional one but usually we deep fry ours because its my husbands favorite! When we fry ours I always inject it with marinade and peanut oil is absolutely the best! Be careful not to overfill the oil! My absolute favorite though is smoked turkey, it has the best taste ever and so juicy and tender, but it takes too long so we won't have it this year. :( maybe next year!

We have a super huge Italian family so we always have two turkeys, both traditional. One stuffed with bread stuffing, one stuffed with meat stuffing. Party some years we do have a third turkey deep fried, it is not my favorite because I just love the traditional, but a lot of my family does love this--so good luck, be safe, and ENJOY!

I Have heard that is it good to fry the Turkey in peanut oil. I like to make an herb turkey. I us fresh, Basil, Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme and sage. Blend them with EVOO and garlic. I rub and whole bird, out side and under the skin. He coming out juicy and delicious.

Party, I've only had deep fried turkey once, and it was very yummy but my dad has a fierce peanut allergy and only when we were partway into our meal did our host mention that it was deep fried in peanut oil. So I'd definitely make sure that there's no one with a peanut allergy, or at least have lots of yummy alternative dishes. Good luck! We're having the same turkey we have every year - my mom stuffs it with a homemade sage stuffing. It's really really good, but I do wish we could try something different one year. The turkeys in Bon Apetit's Thanksgiving issue looked awesome!

Same kind we have every single year...Mom puts the bird in a Reynold's oven bag and roasts it. Nothing fancy and it's kind of plain, but I don't think she wants to put in the effort to do anything else with it. I'm desperate to try a brined turkey, so I'm going to make one for DH and I to eat on our own after Turkey Day is over.

For the first time, we're going out. But I'll probably still make a pie, maybe cranberry sauce, and a few other random things since my SIL will be in town.

I fry my turkey every year, I however don't brine it Party. I do let it soak in a marinade overnight or even for 2 days if it is a large turkey, but then I also inject it with a marinade an hour before cooking, both I usually make myself. As others have said, be sure the Turkey is well thawed. We started to thaw ours today, also make sure you do not overfill the oil. I suggest using peanut oil if there isn't anyone with an allergy, or a half mix with canola oil.

our simple buttered and basted turkey tastes so good, i couldn't believe that's all my mom does to it! maybe it's the amazing stuff that goes inside the bird — either way, i can't wait to eat it!

We did a deep-fried turkey for the first time last year. It was so yummy!! Sorry I can't give tips, as I was the one wielding the fire extinguisher in case of any mishaps! Good luck Party!!

We brined our turkey last month (Canadian Thanksgiving) and stuck it on the rotisserie the next day for about three hours. It was our best turkey yet!

my mom is allergic to turkey so we traditionally get thanksgiving ham and chicken; but this year some cousins are coming to join us and we are going out to a barbeque place

mmm...smoked sounds amazing! Party, make sure you turkey is completely thawed and has no water or ice on it, that could make it explode. Other than that, the other tip for frying is to use a flavor injector to add flavor.

When I host Thanksgiving, I cook a classic oven roasted, brined turkey. When I go to the in-laws they do several turkeys: roasted, bbq'ed, and deep fried. Sorry, I don't have anything to do with the cooking at their house so I don't have any tips!

Party, my only tip would be to watch the Good Eats show on deep fried turkey, Alton gives some great tips and safety guidelines. :D I've had friends who have done this though, great flavor I've been told. Yum, that roulade sounds fantastic, I might make it myself. I think I could convince my husband to go a bit nontraditional if I have bacon on it. :D

We just decided to deep fry our turkey for the first time ever! Does anyone have tips? We're going to brine, but how on earth do I make my favorite part of Thanksgiving, gravy?!
