Let's Dish: What's Your Kitchen Pet Peeve?

Whether or not they want to admit it, all of the people in my life have some sort of kitchen pet peeve. My mother? She hates sticky floors. My friend Katie can't stand it when her husband loads two spoons next to one another in the dishwasher, because the silverware doesn't get fully clean. When my boy puts what he thinks is recyclable (but is really just trash) into the recycling bin, I go insane. Do you have any gripes about what drives you crazy in the kitchen? Fingerprints on transparent dishes. Greasy, filthy plates. Over used, about to tear, discolored sponges. Dirty sink or anything in the sink. Finishing up tidying up the kitchen and just starting the dishwasher, and your sister coming over with a dirty plate in her hand -_-

When I'm mixing something in a big bowl, say cake batter, and someone walks by and sticks their finger in for a taste. If I offer, it's cool, but if you are just watching, then all of a sudden, bam! finger in my batter, you're likely to get a spoon to the forehead.

clean counter tops is a must! no leaving the sponge or washcloth just laying in the sink. it must be rung (is that word??) out and placed in its correct spot. dirty dishes fingerprints on the fridge/appliances

allinavhcnerf, I hate uneven dishtowels, too! The soured sponge (or washcloth/towel) is so gross, I can always smell it, even if it's just a little. The worst is washing your hands and then drying them with a towel that has that smell, it lingers forever. I always give towels a quick sniff before I use them, even dry ones, because that squicks me out so much. How can other people not notice that?! I use sponges, but I *always* smell them first, and usually microwave them for a minute before I begin (good time to wipe down the microwave too) to sanitize them. I made the mistake once of not checking & microwaving one that wasn't totally fresh and I could smell it on the clean dishes later. EW.

i HATE when someone misplaces things and puts it in the wrong spot! i also hate when the dishtowels are uneven!

It has been a couple of years ago... but on Oprah she did a show about bacteria in your house. And ever since I saw that show... I will not have a kitchen sponge anywhere near my me. I can not express how grossed out I was over what kind of bacteria farm, grows in a kitchen sponge. It has more bacteria growing in it than your toilet. (no joke!) If you do use sponge's, you are suppose change them out weekly. Start with a new fresh one every week.

Sponges! The sponges at work and at other people's houses always stink. I can smell them from several feet away. My husband never rinses out the sponge after he uses it to wipe something up, so I soak it in bleach once a week. I never use the nasty things to clean. I feel wasteful always using paper towels to wipe up and then throwing them away, but at least they don't sit around on the counter festering in bacteria for days on end.

- Dirty skin/counters. I can't go to bed knowing I have a sink full of dirty dishes! The cats are always jumping on the counters so I keep Lysol wipes around to wipe them down. - When the hubby keeps piling grabage into an already full garbage can. Throw it out already and put in a new bag!!! - When the hubby leaves the George Foreman grill dirty. I CAN'T STAND cleaning that thing!

I'm with itsme3683, when the dishwasher is unorganized. How hard is it to put all the glasses on the top shelf in a row? My husband is a mess when it comes to the dishwasher. I'd rather him just leave the dishes in the sink so I don't have to re-organize them later.

I have a couple of things: 1) my MIL doesn't always see the reason why we need things refridgerated like eggs and butter. Gross. I get that she's from a ranch in mexico where they don't have such luxury, but come one. 2) No cooking tool is ever in the same place more than once. I'm forever looking for things when trying to cook.

I hate when the dishwasher is unorganized, and I feel kindof bad because my boyfriend will load it but it will be ALL WRONG and I'll go back and redo it. Plus, he's 6'5" and I'm 5'5" so he'll always put stuff WAY on the top shelf, but that's not really cooking-related.

I'm sure I have plenty more than this... It freaks me out when the same knife/spoon/whatever is used to scoop out different condiments. Cross-contamination! If I look into a jar of mayo and there's foreign stuff in it...I have to scoop it all out before I will even consider using it. Blech! My hubby always forgets to rinse plates...so when I get to them they are crusty and need to be soaked. Along with this, all dishes that go into the dishwasher need to be rinsed first. We run it about once a week and it grosses me out when there is food crusted on the plates (plus the funky smell). I could go on and on....

I can't stand stinky sponges. How hard is it to wring it out after each use? There is nothing worse than washing some dishes, then having sponge stink on your hand for hours because *someone* leaves it sitting on the counter wet all the time.

I can deal with almost everything but I HATE sticky floors. I pretty much hate ANYTHING sticky (counter-tops, handles, etc.) . . . UGH!

When my daughter wipe off the counters or the table and sweep the crumbs right on the floor, then you walk in the barefoot... ughh...

I hate when my husband brings his dirty dishes into the kitchen and leaves them NEXT to the sink instead of in the sink! It drives me crazy!

I have two that I can think of off the top of my head. 1) Dishes piling up in the sink or beside the sink, especially if the dishwasher is empty. Ahem, hubby.... 2) As much as I love him helping out, hubby loads the dishwasher way different than I do, and crams so much silverware into one section that I wind up having to disperse it more evenly throughout the other silverware sections.

I hate a dirty counter and stove top. I can deal with dishes in the sink if they're rinsed (my husband is sorely remiss in this chore) but hate when someone leaves food or bev residue on the counter or stove tops. I have microfiber wipes everywhere and all it takes is a little swipe!

Oh, and another is just leaving the sponge in the bottom of the sink. It gets all moldy like that. Eww. Or never changing or sanitzing it? Double Eww.

Lovely 1- HEAR HEAR! If you can walk the dish to the sink, why can't you turn the water on for two seconds to rinse the plate off? I just don't get it. My other pet peeve is using the wrong cutting board. Hello? Ever heard of cross-contamination?

I hate when the dishwasher is EMPTY and my husband or his family (when they visit) put their dirty dishes in THE SINK! How HARD is it to just rinse them and put them in the dishwasher!?!?! :mob: ARGH.

hmmmm I hate when the dishes don't get rinsed when you put them in the sink. I don't mind if they sit there for awhile...but please! RINSE!

I am not a neat person, clutter is my life, but I do like things clean. My biggest pet peeve is when someone doesn't wash the dishes. It can sit for a few hours, but if you go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink, the kitchen starts to smell. My other pet peeve is when my roomie takes the trash out and doesn't replace the bag...they're right under the sink.
