If you've been watching the 2008 Olympics like I've been, then you're probably aware that USA swimmer Michael Phelps is trying to win a record number of gold medals. But do you know what he eats to stay on top of his ambitious game? In a recent video interview, Phelps explains that he fuels his body by eating between 8,000 and 10,000 calories a day. Since the US Olympian doesn't cook, this means eating (not-so-short) stacks of pancakes, buffalo enchiladas, and towering sandwiches packed with turkey, cheese, mayonnaise, and vegetables.
Watch the video below and tell me: Are you surprised by the swimmer's daily caloric intake? Personally, I'm a bit envious! I would probably go through those calories by eating Tex-Mex dishes. What would you eat on a diet of 10,000 calories a day?

Dolce & Gabbana
I guess dedicating 3-5K to chocolate would be frowned upon?
1that picture of him and the pizza is hilarious
2If I were physically capable of consuming that many calories, definitely chocolate, whole milk, huge amounts of pasta and butter with garlic, and copious amounts of cheese or cookies! Oh what a dream diet! LOL
3I would eat a lot of nachos. For sure, nachos.
4Mmm, I'd eat a lot of burritos and enchiladas and lots and lots of Italian. I was surprised that such a high performance athlete doesn't have a nutritionist watching everything he eats and making him eat only organic or only the healthiest, most wholesome foods. He seems to eat whatever he wants! And it's crazy that he consumes such massive amounts of food when he's so incredibly fit. I guess it makes sense when you consider how much he works out, but it still boggles my mind.
5i am so jealous hahaha i'd consume lots of pizza and potatoes and pasta and cheese and baked goods! and ice cream!
6To be honest, I can understand the caloric intake, but I'm a bit surprised at what he's eating.
Most athletes would say lots of lean protein and whole grains, along with some veggies and fruits, help them maintain energy and fuel muscle. But piling on the cheese and mayo?
He may burn 8K calories a day, but unhealthy foods like that can do damage to his heart and arteries. Not to mention the high sodium in some of those foods (like pizza) that can affect blood pressure.
Just because you burn off a lot of calories, doesn't mean you can eat any type of calories you want. Healthy eating is important at all metabolic levels.
I bet some nutritionist or trainer is watching this and cringing at his food choices.
This is one of the biggest myths of health: If I work out a lot, I can eat whatever I want and it will make no difference! Not true.
7o and breads- lots of rolls lol
8I would eat tons of pizza. And chocolate peanutbutter Haagen Daaz.
9Oh my goddd could you imagine dating him? I'd either become grossed out by that huge intake of food or I'd gain about 30 pounds. Prob the latter.
10I would eat so much Mexican and Chinese food...also lots of pasta with cream sauces.
11For breakfast I would have pancakes and a fruit smoothie. For lunch I would a bean and cheese burrito, with chips and a margarita. In the afternoon I would snack on something with peanut butter. In the evening I would have appetizers at home of fresh baked bread with gooey melted brie and apples, and grapes and some white wine. Then I would go to pizza and have vegetable pizza, red wine and a salad with fruits nuts and cheese. Then I would come home to a bowl of frozen yogurt.
In other words, I wouldnt eat all that differently than I do now, lots of beans, veggies, fruit, whole grains and some dairy (ok a lot more dairy than i am used to). But I would so enjoy eating the portion sizes of a male Olympian instead of a petite 5' women.
12i had a revelation this week. i use the daily plate as my food journal, which tracks calories, etc, as well as exercise. i have been LOVING the days i ride my bike to work, because it gives me significant "wiggle room" in my calorie intake. i was telling husband this (he's a competitve amateur cyclist) and he was like "duh! that's WHY i ride so much--so i can eat!". lol. totally not true, but he does eat a lot. he would have to seriously change his eating habits if he stopped riding, though, that's for sure!
it's interesting to compare phelps to dara torres who keeps a nutritionist on staff (along with trainers, stretchers, etc).
sadly, if i could eat 10,000 cals a day, i would probably start by adding breads/pastas. all those simple/refined carbs that i don't really eat much of now. and yes, mexican food. mmmm.
13Hey, the man is going to win more medals than any one in history. I am sure he will change is eating habits later in life. But give him a break because he is doing something no one else will ever do. And he is still young.
14You have to remember he's barely 23. I could see him eating all this now, and say have the same interview in London in 2012 and he could say something different.
Dara Torres is a different breed. Not only is she in her 40's but she's had some injuries. You can NOT compare a 40 year old athlete to a 23 year old. Also I would assume that Phelps is in the pool A LOT more (in terms of overall hours) than Torres is. She's got a family and that takes time (she's made the time). He also swims a lot of different races and she doesn't any longer.
It's like comparing cantaloupes to eggplants. Just can't do it.
15Lots of caloric Starbucks beverages, lots of ice cream and cake and pie and cookies and smores. And lots of cheese and cream cheese and fried stuff.
I love food. I just wish I loved balancing it with exercise... I currently enjoy the above foods in moderation, but I think I could go crazy if given the chance.
16I'll cook for him! *jumping up and down*
17This was a publicity video, so I wouldn't be so sure he's telling the whole truth and nothing but, because that wouldn't be such an entertaining little one minute segment. I'm positive the guy has at the very least his trainer/coach dictating what he eats during his competitive times, and most likely a nutritionist too. The caloric intake I have absolutely no doubt about though, professional athletes have to eat tons just to keep themselves going! But I'm sure during the Olympics he's not chowing down on tons of fatty, empty calories, although he probably carbo-loads at some points.
18Ice cream, for sure. Lots of crusty bread. Mac and cheese. Chips with guac. Pizza. Mmmmm.
19Yes, a little bit of everything especially Indian food.
20Genetics also play a huge role in your health. Unfortunately, I didn't inherit those kinds of genes!
21Wine, cheese, cereals, buttery rice, fettucine alfredo, lots of mexican food, lots of chinese food - you know what? just lots of EVERYTHING!!!
22I used to swim competitively and I can tell you the hunger you get after swimming is like NO OTHER. I'm sure he has no problem eating 10,000 calories a day.
23and I would definitely fill up on pizza and bbq burgers and chicken wings.
24Mmmm...definitely ice cream. I would try all the Ben & Jerry's flavours! Homemade pasta alfredo with a loaf of garlic bread sounds yummy too.
25Seriously, Beram...my four brothers and sisters and I have swam competitively since we were six and I get so jealous watching my brothers eat like that. Six fried eggs for breakfast, millions of pieces of toast with butter and jam, peanut butter from the jar, ice cream and pizza and all kinds of meat, chocolate milk, chocolate everything. mmmmm. and still, they both have about 3% body fat. unfair!
26he eats that, and maintains that GODLY body? hmmm i'd eat lots of chips, carbs carbs carbs, and filet mignon
27DE-F###ing-PRESSING.
28I saw that interview the other night and was like,
. I wish the food choices were healthier however I can't help but envy him for being able to
eat guilty pleasure foods as a daily PART of a meal! Lucky guy...
29i would probably have pizza & guinness nights a couple times a week with sprinkles cupcakes for dessert.
30Because it's almost dinnertime, I'm really hungry and can't even touch on what I would eat for 10,000 calories, lol, or I'll end up snacking right now! But as far as an athlete eating "junk" food, wouldn't you kind of have to? If you need that many calories to maintain your weight, energy and muscle, imagine how much fruit, veg and lean protein you'd have to eat! You'd literally just about be eating non-stop during the day and you'd get full a lot more quickly.
31peanut butter M&M's, pizza, bread, but ohh the tummy ache after.
32Lots of pasta with pesto sauce and parmesan cheese, chocolate, nachos, lots of blue cheese, dip, Turkish bread, fried saganyaki, lots of rice, pizza etc. Hmm. I can't have one of those things without gaining a pound pretty much.
33i sawt he profile on him and it's just amazing what he can put away - and when they interviewed all the people in the area that have food services that he frequents - it was cute to see that they all know what his 'usuals' are and they adore him. i guess if you're that tall and working out that much - you need to fill your body with some type of energy.
34i live in baltimore, basically in the same neighborhood as michael phelps. right now, in this area... he is our golden boy. every night on our local news stations, they interview local restaurant and deli owners that have served him! its hilarious!
35i wish i could eat like that! im jealous! it would be lots of starbucks, mexican food, sushi, PIZZA & wings! lets know forget an endless amount of cupcakes for dessert! i heart cupcakes!
i believe that commercial with nbc is old. it was filmed four years ago, before the athens olympics. in a more recent interview, again with nbc, phelps said that he doesn't eat as much as he used to, so i'm guessing he's not still packing away 8k-10k calories per day...
but yeah, if i could eat 10k a day i would eat full-fat yogurt the whoooole day.
36That is nuts! 10,000 calories is almost the amount that someone should eat per week! If only I were an Olympic athlete, imagine all the food I could eat!
37that picture is great.
38i would like to think that i could eat 10.000 calories each day, but i know that i would get sick after three days. can you imagine how many snickers bars that is??!
"What would you eat on a diet of 10,000 calories a day?"
Um, everything?
39Holy shietttttttttttttttt! That's a lot... But swimming like him burns a lot of calories so it doesn't change anything. The owners were hilarious. hahah!
40The laugh of the woman at 1:16 was priceless. LOL
41a horse?
42I would be so broke.
43He prolly doesnt have a problem eating all that food cause he has the munchies...f**kin stoner
