Subway's ready to test the waters again with spokesperson Michael Phelps: This past Sunday during the US national swimming championships, the sandwichmaker began airing commercial spots starring the Olympic gold medalist. Phelps' year got off to a rocky start when a photo surfaced in February of him smoking marijuana out of a bong.
Within days, USA Swimming had suspended the Olympian from the sport for three months, and Kellogg's decided not to renew its contract with Phelps. Amidst the scandal, the swimming champion was able to hang onto his other major endorsement, Subway — by a thread.
The sandwich chain maintained it was sticking by Phelps, but removed all semblance of Phelps from its website as well as delayed his TV campaign slated for the beginning of the year. The commercials are to reveal that the swimmer — who, at the peak of training, eats as much as 10,000 calories a day — is a fan of Subway's meatball sandwich with jalapeños.
Do you think it's a smart move on Subway's part to hang onto Michael Phelps as a spokesperson?

Hey.....anyone with the "munchies" after a few tokes would love a sandwich!......Maybe they could name the meatball wich "reefer madness"!
1Chief,
...or Smoke on the (Bong) Water.
2i'm just jealous that he gets to eat 10,000 calories a day! haha
3haha me too zabrow. the commercials are already on by me- him and jared. i have no problem with them
4I have no problem with him. I hope they do well.
5I have absolutely no problems with Michael being used to sell subs, underwater earphones or any other product that he and his sponsors think he is right for. The qualities that made him the most successful Olympian of all time are what he is admired for and rightly so. Good grief the last 3 presidents of this country have used the herb and it did not stop people from voting for them so why in the world should this still be an issue. I am not saying he didn't use bad judgement, he did, but it's time to move on from this. Props to Subway for not bailing out, they have a loyal customer in me. By the way, I really liked the ad, it's very cute and clever.
6This man is NOT cute at all. But I did see the Subway commerical for the first time today, and it was nice.
7i think that it's a good thing that they decided to bring him back. i hate to say it but the campaign that they've been running for so long is kind of used up - and tired. bringing him back just shows that they are willing to be forgiving of something dumb that he did, and know where their potential market share lies.
8I've seen the commercials and I think they are hysterical! You gotta love celebs that can laugh at themselves, and Michael so subtly does. And Kudos to Subway for recognizing that good people can make bad choices.
