Tasting America's Top Candy Bars Against New "Unjunked" Versions

Tasting America's Top Candy Bars Against New "Unjunked" Versions

M&M's, Snickers, and Reese's are just a few of the classic American candies we know and love, but they are also filled with less-lovely ingredients like corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, artificial ingredients, and preservatives. Enter Unreal Candy, a new candy maker on the market, seeking to revolutionize candy by making it "unjunked," or free of those ingredients.

Instead, the list of ingredients is readable, recognizable, and, in many cases, ethically and environmentally responsible. The dairy comes from pasture-raised, free-range cows. Cane sugar and agave sweeten the confections, and the all-natural dyes are made from beetroot, turmeric root, and purple cabbage. In addition, the high-quality cocao beans used in the chocolate are traceable, sourced from ethical farms in Ghana and Ecuador.

Here's the best part: these candies won't even set you back. Priced at about $1 per package or bar and sold in large chains around the country like Target, SVS, and Kroger, there's no doubt you are getting the most bang for your buck. Despite all the good stuff, we compared the candies to the American classics in a side-by-side taste test. Take a look at the winners.
