Allez Cuisine! Sampling and Sipping at Alton Brown's Iron Chef Party

Oct 17 2012 - 4:20am

The music was pumping. Justin Warner [1] was chillin'. "The secret ingredient is . . . gastronomy!" the party pamphlet declared. Where else could we be but The Next Iron Chef party at the New York City Wine & Food Festival [2]? It was Saturday night at the jam-packed Highline Stages in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, and everyone from Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto [3] to The Next Iron Chef: Redemption [4] hopeful Alex Guarnaschelli was rocking the party, talking to guests and serving their most worthy dishes.

Curious to know what foods make the cut in Kitchen Stadium? Get a preview when you see the provisions plated by stars of The Next Iron Chef: Redemption and Iron Chef America.

Marcel Vigneron

Marcel Vigneron might've risen to fame as the villain of Top Chef's second season, but he was nothing but kind to guests, passing out his plated dish with a smile on his face.

Marcel's "Cheeks and Leeks"

The chef's dish was smartly titled "Cheeks and Leeks" and featured two slices of meltingly tender beef in a leek-based reduction.

Elizabeth Falkner's Fregola con le Sarde

San Francisco native Elizabeth Falkner prepared a Sicilian-inspired dish with fregola pasta "in the style of Sardinia," in a sauce with sardines, topped off with bread crumbs and lemon zest.

Amanda Freitag's Lamb Meatballs With Greek Yogurt

A line at Amanda Freitag's table was rapidly forming, thanks to her well-executed version of lamb meatballs that were served alongside Greek tzatziki.

Eric Greenspan's Grilled Cheese

The smell of sharp cheese and blooming rinds filled the air, thanks to chef Eric Greenspan's Grilled Cheese. Unfortunately, the sandwich didn't live up to expectations: Greenspan's rendition was not only greasy, but the funkiness of the cheeses didn't seem to blend well together.

Jehangir Mehta's Indian Street Burger

Jehangir Mehta's Indian street burger was filled to the gills with vegetables, from peas to lentils to onions. Think of it as pav bhaji in between a slider bun!

Alex Guarnaschelli's Rib-Eye Steak Sandwich

Chef Guarnaschelli served an open-faced rib-eye steak sandwich. We loved how juicy the meat was, but thought the garlic was too overpowering.

Spike Mendelsohn's BBQ Sweetbreads

"I hope you're going to eat that," Spike said to me as Assistant Editor Anna snapped photos of his dish. We did and without regrets: chef Mendelsohn's BBQ sweetbreads with kimchi was one of the highlights of the night.

Chef Symon's Duck Rillettes

Crab Pozole From Jose Garces

Iron Chef Jose Garces eschewed pork, meatballs, or any of the usual festival bites for a harder-to-serve (but no less delicious) soup: pozole verde with green hominy, crab, green chili, and herbs. Days later, it's still something worth dreaming about.

Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian

New Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian caught up with old friends as he plated food for guests.

Chef Zakarian's choice for the night was a glazed pork belly wrapped in lettuce and carrots.
