In December Oprah Winfrey publicized her weight gain, admitting that she's put on 40 pounds in the past couple of months. Among other things, the powerful talk show host is blaming organic, multigrain blue chips for packing on the pounds.
"My drug of choice used to be potato chips," she said. "Now this year, it was organic, multigrain blue chips — but a bag of them. So you eat a bag of those a day and see what happens if you're not working out." While Oprah's endorsements are normally positive, the people behind her favorite brand of blue tortilla chips — Hain Celestial's Garden of Eatin' — aren't jumping up and down for joy. In a statement, a spokesperson for Hain Celestial, "gently suggested that Ms. Winfrey try the single serving size."
However, Oprah's already moved on from blue chips claiming that she'll now eat sweet potatoes instead. Only time will tell whether the sales of either will be impacted by Oprah's extraordinary influence.
One thing's for sure: If Oprah were to attack the already-struggling organics industry, it might be a blow too big for them to overcome. What do you think about the matter? Does Oprah's opinion of a certain food affect your decision to eat it?

Jovovich-Hawk
I think it unfair to blame weight gain on one specific snack when surely anything in excess can cause weight gain? I dont think she should have mentioned their name specifically or if she did she should have put a positive spin as well on it like "because they're sooo addictive". That said, it wouldn't influence me, I'd just try and keep everything in moderation still.
1Wow. That was not a picture I needed at the top of my webpage this early in the morning...
2I really hate the way everybody reacts when Oprah speaks. Come on people, she's a mere mortal like you and me.
And obviously eating an entire bag of something in a day is not good. PEOPLE - use some common sense!! It's not about the blue chip...it's about eating a whole bag!!
3I also have a bit of an addiction to the very same blue corn chips (there is always a bag in my pantry)...however I could never consume an entire bag in 1 or even 3 days(that's a lot of chips!). I saw the segment on Oprah where she says that she has to plan her meals or she ends up eating those chips. I just cringed at the thought of millions of people deciding to now shun the blue corn chip because Oprah made them out to be "bad".
4why does everyone care so much as to wether Oprah is fat or not? she acts like she is the only person in the world who has ever gained weight. she just needs to realize it's her own fault and and start trying to work it off and as rich as she is i'm sure she could almost pay someone to loss the weight for her she has no excuse for being fat. she can't blame a bag of chips for making her fat when clearly it was her choice to engulf the entire bag even though it specifically says on the back what a serving size is.
5I couldn't care less what Oprah (or any other TV personality, for that matter) thinks about organics. I'll make my own decisions about such things, thank you. I think it's ridiculous how much influence Oprah seems to have over the public's opinions, and also how willing she seems to be to wield that influence. Her struggle with weight has been lifelong and we've all gotten to witness it - if that doesn't prove she's just as human as the rest of us, I don't know what will. Unfortunately, I expect there are still literally millions of sheep - er, people - who will instantly follow her lead, without thinking, including shunning these corn chips.
Sad, truly sad, what that says about us.
6Oprah's food choices don't influence my eating choices/habits one way or another. Also, I don't necessarily think she is saying that the Blue Corn Chips are bad, I think the lesson to take away from it is not to binge on an entire bag of chips or anything for that matter. You're sure to put on weight if you eat like that no matter what it is without exercising.
7What this post needs is a link to the youtube video of Oprah's sweet potato endorsement.
8All dietitians will tell you it's not so much about content as it is about serving size.
9eating a whole bag of anything isn't good for you ... even Oprah should know that
10Nice to see Oprah accepting responsibility for her actions. Oh wait, that's not what she's doing at all. Someone take this woman's pulpit away!!
11A calorie is a calorie whether it is coming from a healthy source or a toxic waste dump. Too many calories in and not enough expended is the source of the weight gain here. If I am to snack on a tortilla chip I will pick Garden of Eatin over Dorito every time.
12This woman is a MORON! Their CORN CHIPS FOR CRIPESSAKES -CHIPS not carrots not even air. Did this freaking MORON (YES OPRAH IS A MORON) think that because it says 'organic' on the label that she could inhale several bags and not inhale the associated calories?
Just in my supermarket research for myself I've found that foods stating that they are 'organic' are often higher in calories than their counterparts (portions for portion).
I cannot believe people idolize this clown and still watch her show.
13To be honest, I wouldn't publicly announce that I ate a bag of family sized corn chips a day. Some things are just TMI.
14Maybe she should put the blame squarely where it lies - with HER! Sheesh, she wasn't working out and was eating a bag of corn chips a day...whose fault is that? Certainly not the company making the corn chips! And corn chips are corn chips - what, if they are labeled ORGANIC somehow the calories and fat don't count?? Give me a break!
Oprah, here is some advice - go back to your regular work out routine and stop eating junk! That should help you drop the weight.
15"gently suggested that Ms. Winfrey try the single serving size."
LOL!
It's crazy how Oprah has the power to affect the economy like that. Also, if she eats too many sweet potatoes, won't she gain weight still?
16Thats what I was going to say Mdus Vivendi! She made it sound like sweet potatoes have no calories.
17I know, right? Sweet potatoes aren't potato chips, but they're not celery either.
18well i think that if people are going to boycott the product because oprah gained weight then people are fickle. it's interesting to me how celebs can really lead what people do. i'm hopeful that this isn't going to make any difference with anything. she does clearly say that she didn't work out- so that's something that people should realize. you need to work out regardless of what you're eating. it's s necessary evil.
19oprah's opinions never have any impact on my opinions.
20if you watched the show, she obviously wasn't blaming the corn chips, she was blaming herself for eating the entire bag. she was talking about the irony of it all; yeah, she was eating "healthier" food but she was eating more of it, which any genius knows isn't any better (and is usually worse.) i also don't remember her actually mentioning the name brand? i probably just wasn't paying attention though, the tv is usually background noise for me. and the sweet potato thing was more of a splurge/reward thing. by eating well all day she could afford to eat a sweet potato or something like that.
and no, oprah's food endorsements (or whatever you want to call them) don't effect me. i'm always looking to try new stuff, but i really don't care if she doesn't like something, not really gonna effect me.
21Why does everyone care so much about what Oprah says/does? So she eats a whole bag of chips in a day...I'm sure there are other people that do that too. I feel bad for any company that Oprah happens to mention in passing that she's had a bad experience with...it's like a sentence of doom. It also says SO much about women in our society. You'd think we're a bunch of dumb cows that just follow Oprah-cow and moo when she moos and eats when she eats. Seriously, are we that stupid that we think that we'll gain weight simply by buying blue corn chips just because Oprah eats them??
22I highly doubt that the chips are the only factor in her recent weight gain. Plus, obviously, you shouldn't eat a bag a day and expect to remain thin. I hope this company doesn't suffer do to her thoughtlessness.
23I think even Oprah zombies are smart enough to figure out it's not the food it's the serving. If anything it's an endorsement!
24lulz. it's not like corn chips are the sole cause of her weight gain. and chips aren't even healthy, no matter what people like to tell themselves. "organic" "veggie" "blue corn" "flax" chips, etc. doesn't mean it's not still junk food. she's old, she should just accept it. sick of hearing about her vain ways to lose weight and look younger, like that mockery of a vegan diet she went on. x.x
25"gently suggested that Ms. Winfrey try the single serving size."
awesome!
come on oprah, own your own crap.
26wow, the woman can't divulge little specifics about something as simple as her eating habits without it being offensive? i don't watch her show, but based on what's written above she said you can't eat an entire bag daily and not expect to gain weight, especially when you're not active. sounds like she's admitting to her own fault. and sounds like she thinks organic blue corn tortilla chips are delicious...
27Oprah nor any other celeb influences anything in my life.
So it's a big, huge, giant NO. Didn't even know she was still on the air
28ohhh blue chips is good
:( so hard to resist
29I watched Oprah the first week when she discussed her weight and then blamed her thyroid. Come on it's easy to blame than to take responsibility. I enjoy the blue chips when I'm flying Jet blue, is that the reason I'm overweight? I don't think so. I'm overweight because I enjoy food, I'm lazy and don't exercise and don't seem to be taking care of myself. I can say it's my health's fault or I'm not starving for attention. But, to take blame and blame a bag of chips and health, come on GROW UP OPRAH!! You have so much and have so many people looking up to you, that when will you just admit you enjoy eating and not running or exercising? Maybe instead of her eating any types of chips she should settle for a carrot. Oh, but wait she may blame them for her current weight gain. Oh, who can eat a carrot plan, I added creams, cookies and ice cream to give it flavor. Plus Oprah, it's time to step up to the plate and admit that's it's not the chips, it's YOU being lazy and loving food.
30It's not the "Blue" it's the "Corn" that matters. Because eating corn makes you fat! It’s in almost everything we eat and drink. From high fructose corn syrup in your soft drink, to the oil used to fry your French fries and all the chips in the snack aisle. Heck it’s a major part of the beef in your hamburger! There’s a reason they feed it to cows, it makes them fat! So if you don’t want to look like a cow, stop eating like one! I found a great new product with an ingredient that even Dr Oz said we should be eating more of. They're called Beanitos! They are loaded with naturally occurring fiber and that makes you feel full, not to mention one of the highest protein chips available as well as naturally gluten free! They contain only Black or Pinto beans, Pure Canola Oil, Water, and Sea Salt. That’s it. No Corn. No Potato. No Grains.
31Those sound so good! Do they sell them at normal grocery stores?
32Wow.. you really think corn makes people fat? You sound like you work for that "beanitos" company, which I've never heard of. Stop trying to scare people. -.-'
33Whole grains are required for optimum health. As are Legumes, but junk food regardless of what whether its made with corn or legumes is JUNK FOOD. Same goes for chips made of vegetables or chips made of fruit - You're taking something that is otherwise a good food and processing it into something with additional calories but no additional nutritional value.
34Hey Ogra, i eat those chips and i am not fat....why is that....oh thats right I have self control. Only lazy people blame inanimate objects for their own laziness.
35CaterpillarGirl, you may not like what she said but don't disrespect her, her name is Oprah.
36Oprah is a metaphor for what is happening in our culture today. Metaphorically, because there isn't much food in our food people keep eating more and more fake food to satisfy their hunger for real food - thus the obesity epidemic. I prefer sprouted 100 whole grain pretzels to snack on. They are made with sprouted flour that digests as a vegetable. How cool is that?! Real food, real health.
37No one should be taking food advice from Oprah! If you want financial advice, motivational thoughts fine. But weight loss and how to eat obviously isn't her specialty. If you want to know what is healthy, read the ingredients! If you eat a bag of any chips a day I guarantee you, you will be as fat as Oprah. If there is anything to learn from Oprah's dieting failures, it is that there is no magic diet and eating in excess makes you fat.
38i don't think Oprah would ever say anything to hurt anyone; i feel she tries to help the world , maybe she should try to focus more on Oprah and stop letting people pour out all their trash on her . dragging all the baggage around from so many people will make anybody gain weight or sick. there is something very special about Oprah. i will keep her in my prayers.
39Oprah, two words, portion control. Eat less, lose weight. It's not rocket science.
