I freeze some big bottles of water ahead of time to use in the cooler. If you're going out into the heat, you're going to drink water anyway. It works great - it stays frozen long enough to keep the food cold (because it's basically a big block of ice), and melts fast enough that you will end up drinking it all up before you leave. Unlike the giant block of ice, the water wouldn't go to waste. And Unlike the reusable ice-pack, you don't have to carry excess weight on the return trip. Plus this way there wouldn't be stuff that you can't eat or drink in your cooler taking up precious real estate.
