Plantain
A member of the banana family, this fruit is larger, less sweet, and more firm than the common banana. It's extremely popular in Latin American cuisine and has a mild, squashlike flavor with a starchy texture similar to a potato. Plantains are never consumed raw but are enjoyed fried, boiled, or mashed.

So those as someone else mentioned before are NOT plantains. Also you can eat them raw if you really want to they are my dads and sisters favorite but they are uber addicted to anything banana or plantain. (FYI if you eat them raw expect them to be very starchy unless you let them get "ripe" which actually looks really really gross because the skins become totally black and look almost moldy BUT when they are that ripe they are the BEST when fried) mmmmm platanos w/ refried black beans and sour cream my FAVORITE breakfast sine 1981!

I had these on a burger about a month ago, first time ever eating them and they were extremely tasty. I keep forgetting to add them to my shopping list.

i've had plantains before, but i've never really understood why they aren't eaten raw. is there anything specific for that or is it just the way that folks prepare them?

This reminds me how much I like tostones...yum. On the other hand, what is pictured is not plantains but what we call 'apple bananas', and those you eat raw.

I love maduros!!! I never cared for the salty version, but I cook mine when they're ripe in a little butter and olive oil to bring out the flavor. Absolutely love em...and a staple in my familial pantry.

I love plantains! We like to mash them, fry them in batter and serve it with sugar. Mmm.

My daughter came back from a trip to the Dominican Republic and cooked me some last week. They were fried, smashed and fried again. She served them with ketchup. Quite tasty.
