After returning from the farmers market with pluots and apriums aplenty, Party, another coworker, and I got into a debate over hybrid fruits and vegetables. Personally, I love pluots, especially juicy, green Flavor Queens that possess none of the tartness of a typical plum. But Party begged to differ. "I like the way a peach tastes. I like the way a plum tastes. I don't want to taste them together," she bemoaned. Where do you stand?

Totally undecided. They make me nervous.
1Isn't a pluot a cross between a plum & an apricot, not a peach?
2I'm with Chancleta...very very nervous. I mean, is it natural?
3it depends what I'm in the mood for.
4yes it's 100% natural, this is how Gregor Mendel discovered genetics, essentially. just playing around with pea plants and seeing what happened if he mixed pollen.
I have an allergy to stone fruit so while these look pretty and tasty, I have to skip.
5I love the "dinosaur egg" pluots. I have a friend who's son won't eat fruit, except for "dinosaur eggs" because he likes the name.
6I'm with Party. Hybrids make me feel like my brain is fighting with itself.
7The hybrids should not make you feel nervous. This is not like making a glow in the dark frog or making a human ear grow on a mouse. Hybrids are made through cross pollination, which can happen in plants naturally anyway. For example, my mom planted yellow and pink columbine in her yard years ago. Now, through cross pollination, she has deep plum, pink and purple, red and yellow in addition to the original yellow and pink. Also? Dog breeds? Sort of like hybrids too. If there was no cross breeding and tinkering we would all still have wolves...not exactly the same thing but sort of the same point. If a labradoodle doesn't make you nervous then a pluot certainly shouldn't either.
8Love it. My enjoyment of apples would be nothing without the agro-scientific hybrid apple the Honeycrisp. Every year I pick up a few dozen Honeycrisp apples and have the deep desire to send a thank you to the University of Minnesota's agro-science department for creating such a prefect apple.
9Love pluots!!! I love hybrids. there is so much more taste its exciting
i get a
fresh round of hybrids at the farmers market each week.
10i'm in the middle. When I'm the mood for a plum, I'll get a plum but if I want to try something new, i'll take a risk and try a hybrid
11I have no problem with them, I just don't think I've ever had a good one. Heck I'll eat most anything though!
12I'm not against the idea, but I just happen to enjoy the "old" fruits better than the new hybrid ones. I do like tangelos, though...those are awesome! But I mostly just eat apples and oranges and peaches and this week, fresh-from-my-farm blackberries!!
13I'm in total agreement with Wackdoodle when it comes to Honeycrisp apples. Our Minnesota season will be starting very soon, but not soon enough! This really is a food that everyone should try during their lifetime.
14I got a couple of varieties to try, but my local Jewel's "helpful" signs only further confused me. They had a sweet-to-tart and firm-to-soft scale for each variety, but they seem to think all stone fruit is sweet and soft. Hmmm.... scratching my head
15Weird/gross is my first reaction,
16Why would this make you think weird/gross? It's not like we're talking about crossbreeding a cat and an oppossum.
17I think it walks a fine line on why it's produced. A pluot (plum and apricot-don't know why the author said peach) is very good and more juicy than an apricot. The ones from my local farmer's market aren't altered to affect nutritional value.
Now genetically modified foods: corn, some tomatoes, wheat etc are altered to produce higher yields, resist disease, etc can alter the true original nutritional content. Then again some aren't too bad. In some cases heirloom may be best. It's a matter of choice when at the grocery store.
