Have You Ever Changed Your Order Based on Price?

Several nights ago, I stopped by an organic restaurant to pick up some takeout for my guy. Although I didn't catch the price, I ordered the fish tacos — but when time came to sign the credit card bill, I recoiled at the amount — $20! I was slightly embarrassed, and hated to trouble the waitstaff who had to run into the kitchen to cancel the order, but the amount was far more than I was expecting to pay for tacos. Have you ever done something similar?

I always look at price before ordering and I will definitely pass on a pricier entree in favor of something cheaper. This usually happens with fish. I'd love so often to order salmon or the fish of the day, but the MP is always so much.

I've done something similar, when I was charged $15 for a large chicken ceasar salad, opened the to go box when I got home, and saw what was barely a side salad. I took it back and politely asked them to have the kitchen add more lettuce. They protested, but I told them I've managed a kitchen before and if I pay $15 for a salad, it had better be large, plus the lettuce is the cheapest part of it. They retossed it all with more lettuce for me. Sometimes restaurants and kitchens need the feedback.

I definitely believe that if you didn't bother to check the price, you have to accept the total. I recommend always confirming the total price before the order comes out. Now, that doesn't mean that I don't encourage you to go ahead and look bug-eyed when the cashier rings up the price or asking for a comment card to complain about the cost. I think restaurant owners should be informed when you think that a menu item is overpriced. You should preface it with "I understand that the cost of ingredients may be higher for this item, but I was shocked when..." and you should actually believe that. :)

I don't think I'd order something without knowing the price.. but if I ever did, I'd be too embarassed to change it.

I consider the price before ordering. If I did happen to order something w/out catching the price, I'd just pay it. It would consider it my error for not paying attention or not asking how much it was if money was an issue.

I always check the menu to make sure I know how much the price is, and am not afraid to ask if its not listed. Most wait staff will completely understand. Its like asking for pricing on specials not listed on the menu

Ouch, Caterpillar Girl! Give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe.I've never changed an order based on price, but I should have. My husband and I visited Mono Lake and went to a cafe someone recommended there... it's apparently some big touristy thing and the food was waaay overpriced but we thought it'd be worth it. I ordered fish tacos and my husband ordered a sandwich, and when the guy reached into the display case and pulled out a pre-made sandwich and slapped it on the plate, I had a bad feeling about the place and wanted to cancel the order - especially when we got the total and it was ridiculous. But we didn't, and my husband's sandwich was soggy and boring and my tacos were so insanely spicy that they were disgusting and I couldn't eat them. What a waste!

I usually look at the prices beforehand, but if I want something on the menu and it is more than I want to pay for it, I don't freak out. My husband, on the other hand, will change his order if the price is significantly higher than what he expected.

No, I am smart enough to look at the menu, or ask them how much the item is.

I consider price before ordering, but I don't think I've changed an order... sometimes if people ask "would you like X with that", and I ask if its an additional cost, and will decline if its too much

I would not change an order after I placed it. When I go out, I do look at the price, but I am such a cheap date. I absolutely hate to waste money, so instead of getting a 20 dollar steak, I get a 6 dollar burger. My boyfriend is forcing me to get a nice dinner on our next outing.

I would not change the order once I placed it. However I do consider the price a little - but if I really want it I'm going to order it regardless.

I've never actually changed my order after placing it because of price, and I don't think I ever would. I do sometimes base my order on price though, or if I'm trying to decide between two items, I'll choose the less expensive one.
