With Memorial Day weekend upon us, the travel season has officially kicked into full gear. But times like these mean Americans will be favoring road trips over tours abroad. For those of you who enjoy hitting the highway, do share with me: what's your favorite road food pit stop?

Dorothy Perkins
I'm all about the Shari's. Strangely, I never eat there at home, but I love their breakfast when we're on the road. Plus their coffee is actually really good.
I hate road trips. They sounds like a nightmare to me! But that being said, when I was little my mom used to take us to Denny's and I would love it because she let me order a strawberry milkshake.
Cracker Barrel handsdown! I love that place.
I'm with kiwi. Cracker Barrel is amazing for road tripping -- good cheap eats (much more variety than just another hamburger), a kitschy store to kill time during the wait, and those awesome golf tee games at each table. I wish I could find one further west than AZ.
it would have to be either denny's or IHOP just because those are the ones that i see when i'm traveling.
I've only been to Denny's so I can't really have a favorite. I remember when my Grandparents would take my brother and I up to Oregon for two weeks every summer, we'd always stop at a Denny's. It was great!
Dennys has the best ranch dressing and veggie burger
I'd love anyone's advice on chains with good (or any!) vegetarian options for long road trips!
I should add, vegetarian options that aren't basically plates full of high-fat, greasy cheese!
I voted for Cracker Barrel but I seriously love all of them. I have a weird obsession with road food restaurants and diners. And I love road trips.
Cracker Barrel has the closest thing to my Grandma's buttermilk pancakes! Not quite as perfect, but close.
Cracker Barrel!!! You get rocking chairs (that counts as a ride), checkers (that counts as a game) and playing with all the cool nostalgic toys for sale (that counts a show) AND THEN you get to eat comfort food for a great price just before you buy some cool old-timey candy you can't find anywhere else... I love it! *and no, I don't work there :)*
Vegetarians all you have to do is order a veggie plate (ask if they put meat in the veggies first) or a salad, or off the sides section of the menu. I've done it, it's fine.
It's a road trip...if you're too uptight to eat road trip food...map out the grocery stores.
I've only been to a Cracker Barrel once in my life, with my dad, but it was actually pretty fun!
Waffle House is amazing! I love how small it is, and their waffles are SO good. I've only been to Cracker Barrel once & I was so disappointed.
Oh man, cracker barrel all the way. I'll go out of my way to get to one. They don't have em that much up in Mass.
Oooh, so hard to choose between WaHo and Cracker Barrel.
Anderson's Pea Soup Restaurants. love it!
Bob Evans. They have these amazing cinnamon pancakes...
Waffle House, hands down. Denny's follows.
When on the road, I like to look for a busy Mom and Pop type diner or ask a local to recommend a restaurant. I want to try something that I can't get back home.
I do the same as fuzzles.
I"m with fuzzles too- I'd much rather take a chance on a mom n pop place than eat at a chain.
Waffle House is divine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can only have it though when I am in the south.
I'm with fuzzies The whole point of a road trip is to see other parts of our country(or any country in fact) Look for a little local place. And even if you don't like him, Look at Guy Fieris Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Hes been all over so if your driving and you don't know where to, just look for a bunch of different options in that general area. Or just try something new. Just because they're home owned doesn't mean they're dirty or expensive. Plus in this time of economic downturn, its better to look for the local places. Go a mile off the highway and support Americas towns. Its not just big box stores that are the problem. And theres some darn good food out there!
I'm with fuzzies, also. But Cracker Barrel is great in a pinch because they serve breakfast all day.
I LOVE Cracker Barrel!! I like the little country store and my husband and I really like to sit by the fireplace and play checkers together. Plus, they have pretty good, cheap food and there's usually something that everyone can enjoy. Plus they have that little hopping game that you can play at the table while you wait
My uncle is all about Waffle House though. He has to wait until they make a trip down south before he can eat there though...we don't have them here in the North.
i loveee cracker barrel. i remember going once or twice as a kid, and only twice in the past year since! but i love it.
friendly's. they are my northeast treat!
Andersen's Pea Soup! Yeah!!! The best thing about road tripping between L. A. and the Bay Area.
I do like Cracker Barrel through. No Sugar Added Apple Pie rocks.
Agreed on just finding a local diner or little spot. I hate chains as a rule and don't want one when I'm traveling.
I have never even heard of Cracker Barrel.
cracker barrel ftw.
Denny's has veggie burgers that are surprisingly yummy and you can order them without cheese.
waffle house!!!!!
I love Wendy's on road trips. The only fast food I eat is McDonald's at the airport and rest-stop Wendy's so it's a real treat for me. Although, if time allows Friendly's ice cream makes for a lovely afternoon tea.
in-n-out burger
in-n-out burger
Cracker Barrel....hands down.
The little chef, its a british thing and theres one every few miles on our motor ways, some can be pretty grotty but if you go to a good one they do gorgeous english breakfast, yum!
o but if im choosing american, it has to be Craker Barrel, me and my family fell in love with it when we went to florida. and i lv the name.
