A Slice of Key Lime Pie, Please! 9 Florida Food Recipes

Feb 22 2013 - 10:50am

As we enjoy the South Beach Wine and Food Festival [1], we'd like to pay homage to all the wonderful dishes that hail from the Sunshine State. If you haven't had a chance to visit and taste them firsthand, then we've got good news for you: you can make them in your own kitchen with these famous Florida recipes. Think seafood and Cuban dishes, and ready your taste buds for a whole lot of Southern savor.

Mojitos

No roundup of the Southern state would be complete without a good mojito recipe [2]. Get your fixings of rum, lime juice, and mint, and then give the classic drink a twist by adding raspberries and sparkling wine.

Kumquat Marmalade

Did you know the Sunshine State is one of the largest producers of kumquats and even hosts a Kumquat Festival in Dade City every year? Turn the tangy fruit into a kumquat earl grey marmalade [3] for an unexpected toast spread.

Shrimp

Rock shrimp make their way from the state's East Coast-bordering Atlantic Ocean and straight onto the plates of many Floridians. They're known for being small with an extremely hard shell, but once they're cracked, we think they'd pair perfectly with three killer shrimp dipping sauces [4].

Oysters

Known for producing some of the tastiest oysters in the country, Florida gets most of its bivalves from the Apalachicola Bay. Ditch the lemon juice or hot sauce — and the restaurant — and prepare your own oysters with a Champagne mignonette [5] at home instead.

Conch Fritters

Tasty conch fritters [6] are another must-have treat to come out of the Florida Keys. The mollusks with intricate shells are usually fried and come with a kick; this recipe, for instance, incorporates just the right amount of spice.

Cubano Sandwich

If you're looking for a true cuban sandwich [8], then look no further than a typical lonchería in South Florida. Find out what really makes it authentic, and how you can make it yourself, by looking past the slow-cooked pork. Hint: it's all about the buttered bread.

Slow Cooker Cuban Chicken

All it takes is 20 minutes — and a slow cooker — to take Cuban chicken [9] from meh to marvelous. Then all that's left is for you to savor the dish's complex sauce and truly tender meat that you'd find in Florida's Little Havana.

Scallops

Many Floridians can't wait for Summer because it means major scallop season on the Gulf Coast. But you don't have to hit the waters to enjoy scrumptious seared scallop [10] topped with rich wine sauce. It's so simple, even a beginner can master the recipe.

Key Lime Pie

You'd be surprised at how easy it is to whip up some sweet and tangy key lime pie [11], named for limes found in the Florida Keys. All you really need is key lime juice, egg yolks, and sweetened milk in a pie crust to join the ranks of those who've made Florida's official dessert.
