Rachael Ray's Garbage Bowl: Love It or Hate It?

By now I'm sure you're all aware of Rachael Ray's garbage bowl technique. She keeps a bowl on the countertop during cooking, and stashes all the trash and bits in the bowl. It's actually a pretty great tip and helps make cleanup a breeze. I sometimes follow it myself, and just use one of my smaller mixing bowls. Recently Ms. Ray has actually started selling her own garbage bowls ($17.95). What do you guys think of them? I'd rather use a bowl I already have. After all, do I really need a special bowl for "garbage"?

Duh! The bowl can be used for more than just the garbage while you're cooking! It would be a great salad bowl, or to use outdoors for barbeques. It's got the popular graniteware look with cool colors. Get over yourself haters.

Garbage bowls are great, my mother has always used one when cooking at home or preparing meals for our restaurant. I learned from her and have a designated bowl I use but to pay $18 for one is ridiculous and shows how over merchandised everything is.

i get the point of it, and have used similar things in the past, but i don't know...i'm still on the fence on whether it's a good idea or not.

Whoops! I voted for the idea of the garbage bowl. Didn't realize that she was selling her own. I use one I already have! I don't need to buy a specific one.

I just use a plastic grocery bag that I can toss later.

I love the actual idea, and use it (typically a paper brown bag from store or the weggie bag from a veggie im using in my dish) but a bowl just for it, any bowl would work, duh! some people will buy anything since it has her name on it!

I hate Rachel Ray, and I hate the idea of selling bowls for any specific purpose when it's just a freakin' bowl. I might approve if they actually said "garbage" on them. Or were compostable so you could just compost the whole lot.

You would think that someone who cooks so much would design or arrange their kitchen in such a way that the trash can would not be too far from the cooking area.

Honestly, what is wrong with just going to a charity shop and finding some cool, funky (and if you are lucky, really sweet little retro number) bowl and using THAT for garbage? I'd rather spend a couple of dollars on a used one, know that served a charity instead of a celebrity cook, and kept something perfectly re-useable/recyclable in business....and take the other 17 to buy something fun to cook! Seriously this is mind-boggling to me...I cannot imagine people spending money on it.

I have the glass nesting set from WS and I've been using the big bowl far onion skins, potato peels, etc and they were like $24 for like 10 bowls.

I love it. I use a garbage bowl for when I am cooking. I cook with a lot of produce, and need to peel and cut a lot. Its nice having a garbage container right in front of me on the counter. However I use this old coors light mini bucket found in my parents basement.

That is a huge waste of money. I just use a garbage can when I am cooking. Duh.

why not use a giant bowl you already have. or at least buy a cheap one for a buck or two. this 18 dollar bowl looks like vomit as well.

I think most women (the ones I know anyway) use plastic grocery bags. They simply place them on the counter top, throw all the trash or leftovers in it, tie it, and then toss it into the trash can like most people in the world. I mean we have to get rid of those pesky plastic grocery bags anyway, so why not use them for this reason *Rachel Ray* duh. I would not pay $18 for an ugly bowl. I'm with the majority of females...plastic, plastic, plastic bags for me and my countertop trash.

Im with PartySugar too. I just place all my trash in the tray of whatever meat i used or use one of the smaller plastic bags from the fruit and veggie area.
