Top Chef Vegas: Episode 10

Things are winding down on the sixth season of Top Chef Vegas. After last night's episode only six cheftestants remain. Instead of a guest judge that's a chef, the actress Natalie Portman decides the fate of the competitors. It was all about vegetarian food. Did you watch? Let's discuss it after the break.

How cute is Kevin? Don't you want to be a member of his family? His grandma makes him breakfast every morning!
Wasn't it weird that some of the chefs were not familiar with the iconic television shows?
If you were a cheftestant, would you have assumed the challenge was all about steak?

Mike is such an a@#hole. His comment at he end about how Robin was always in the bottom showed how out of touch with reality he is. Both he and Robin were at the bottom of the elimination challenge the same number of times - 3. Robin has won two quick fires - he has only won one. Neither one has won an elimination challenge. Yet somehow in the ego addled brain of his - he was a contender. Michael is another a*&*hole. His complete lack of grace in making that snarky comment about Kevin's meal is typical of how he has behaved all season. Kevin is the best chef on the show and a decent guy to boot.

I am so happy Mike is gone. He was such a douche and his food was nothing special. Roar, I feel exactly the same way, and glad to know I'm not the only one!

1. Kevin is my favorite. I would love his style of cooking. Simple and delicious. 2. I thouhgt it was weird. These weren't obscure shows. 3. Six seasons in they should have know some curve ball was coming. 4. Add beans. 5. Kind of, but they certainly had it easier than the chefs who had to cook for Zoe D. She was near impossible. Not only was she vegan, but she didn't eat soy or grains. 6. It was certainly less serious than most of the dinners they have on there. 7. It might be interesting. I do like Fabio and Stefan from the same season. 8. I would prefer Kevin wins, but I would be happy with either of the brothers or Jen taking the title. I am so happy Mike is gone. Wasn't it weird that some of the chefs were not familiar with the iconic television shows? Yes. 3. If you were a cheftestant, would you have assumed the challenge was all about steak? Probably, but I would also take into consideration that this is Top Chef and having watched other seasons not everything is what you think. 4. What's your technique for cooking vegetarian? I only cook vegetarian lol. I can only make eggs and grilled cheeses. I haven't moved onto meat yet. 5. Didn't the cook-for-the-random-vegetarian-celebrity feel like a challenge we saw on Top Chef Masters? I would have no idea. 6. How much fun did the dinner look? They all kept laughing, joking, and making sexual innuendos! I totally wanted to be at that party. I never caught the innuendos. I guess I wasn't really listening. 7. two things... 1.i think part of the reason that they came up with the dishes they made was bc they were not able to go shop for heartier vegetarian ingredients, like bulger, quinoa, etc. they had to use what they found in tom's steak house kitchen. 2. michael v is really bothering me. he is way too arrogant. i really liked him at the beginning, but i find myself routing for him to lose. go kevin!

1.) I Love-LOVE-love Kevin. He is an Atlanta boy and I love how sweet he is in the kitchen. AND HE CAN COOK! 4.) I am surprised like everyone that there was no rice, pasta, or eggs? Vegans don't eat eggs but I thought vegetarians were cool with it? 5.) I did think the challenge was a bit of a cop out from Top Chef Masters-vegan challenge. 8. I want Kevin to WIN!!! But I want the final 4 to be the brothers V, Kevin, and Jennifer. I don't really like either of the brothers and half the time can't really tell them apart.

1.Kevin is great! He seems like a genuinely nice person. 2. I thought it was a little weird that Mike I. has never seen an episode of Seinfeld. It seemed like everyone else was at least familiar with his or her show. 3. I would have assumed the challenge wasn't about steak, just because Top Chef likes to surprise the contestants. 4. I think flavor is a huge thing when cooking vegetarian. And making a hearty meal. I love pasta, but vegetarian options are so often pasta, salad, or veggies burgers. There are so many other things that can be done. 5. Yeah, I get that they wanted to have the chefs do a vegetarian meal, but I don't see the point of including Portman. 6. It did look like a ton of fun. I love dinner parties of about that size. 7. Eh, I'm kind of indifferent. I do like Fabio, though. 8. I might be the only one, but I'm still rooting for MIchael V. I would be happy with him, Brian, Kevin, or Jen, though. I think their cooking has been consistently good, except for a few minor slip-ups on Jen's part.

1. I love Kevin. 2. I was surprised Robin didn't know Sesame Street because she "ate healthy and didn't watch much TV." My mom only fed me healthy snacks and didn't let me watch much TV, but I was definitely permitted to watch Sesame Street. 3. Definitely. It was in a steak house! Owned by Tom Colicchio! 4. I was a vegetarian for a number of years, so my vegetarian dishes are much better than my meat dishes. I always make sure that there's a protein and something green, and I try to stay away from pasta. Vegetarians get fed way too much pasta. 5. To be honest, I had gotten the Zooey Deschanel challenge confused and thought that they had already done that in Top Chef this season -- but, you're right, it was on Masters. 6. Raciest Top Chef dinner ever. It was great. 7. Meh. I tend to forget who each chef is after their season is over. 8. I am DEFINITELY pulling for Kevin. PS -- Michael V. whining at the end how he could have made Kevin's dish in 20 minutes? Obviously he couldn't, or he would have won. Just because Kevin's dish wasn't as pretty as his didn't mean that it didn't taste just as good -- or better, as the case obviously was. He totally turned me off.

1. i'm warming up to him actually. i wasn't sure that i liked him at first but he's really impressive. i'm just worried that his style is so much like past chefs. 2. i'm not surprised - you have to remember how young some of them are :) 3. going in - sure - but knowing that the show is all about twists - i would have figured that something was up. i feel though that last season or 2 ago they did a challenge at tom's place that was all about butchering meat 4. i AM a veggie - so i'm more about the types of things that kevin did that are filling and robust 5. yup - although NP isn't a vegan like ZD...so there were more options 6. it def seemed like they were having more fun than in past dinners! 7. i guess i am...i don't know how i feel about it 8. one of the brothers - although i have a feeling it'll be kevin based on how much the judges love him now.

Anyone else tired of Bravo manufacturing this brotherly rivalry? I feel like they keep reediting the same clips over and over and being like, "look how much they fight!" :oy:

1. Kevin is cute, but his musings remind me of how very young he is. 2. No. They are all fairly young and the shows (except for the Sopranos) are pretty old. 3. No, because this show always has twists and turns. 4. Stir-fry or a homemade veggie pizza. 5. Yes, and I think it was unfortunate that Natalie Portman was the guest celebrity, since she has gotten some very negative press, first for defending and signing a petition in support of Roman Polanski, and then she decided to lecture us all on the immorality of eating meat. Not sure she knows what "immorality" means. 6. It did look like fun. The food didn't but the guests looked like they were having a great time. 7. Yes!!! 8. I loved the Brothers V, but I am so very sick of their sibling rivalry which has no place on this show. Jennifer seems to be falling apart. So, although I still think he looks like a troll, I would vote for Kevin. He just seems to keep himself above the fray.

1. Kevin is so funny. I loved when he went out to dinner and he said "I didn't get this fat by accident" or something like that. 2. Nope its not weird. I've never seen Cheers, Gilligan Island or the Sopranos. I know what they are about but never seen an episode. 3.Yes! 4. Pasta with sauteed veggies usually. I very rarely do vegetarian but I'm trying to change that. 6. It looks like it was so much fun. I would so want to be there. 7. I think I missed that ad too. 8. Kevin because he is so awesome. I really want to go to his restaurant. -Mike V. is slowly moving down my list of favorites. Why is he so damn cocky and arrogant. He had such a childish reaction when Kevin won last night. It was a little bit ridiculous. -Why the he!! is Robin still there? Mike I had an off day but he should have stayed. Robin has sucked since the campfire challenge and she is still around. I'm beginning to really question the judges judgment right now because this ridiculous. How is she in the top 6?

I was surprised that all of them did vegetables too. There are so many tasty whole grains or like manny said homemade pastas. Or maybe chickpea burgers. It was like they all had simultaneous brain farts. If I try to cook vegetarian, it can be the heartiest meal in the world and hubby will still ask where's the meat? :) So we usually do veg lunches. I so want Bryan to win. He's our town celebrity right now and we're all rooting for him. Oh and the "dinner party" seemed so forced and not fun. I was actually aggravated that they spent so much time on chit chat and not on what people thought of the food.

1. I love Kevin; he has to be the nicest reality show contestant ever. And I would totally love to be a part of his family. 2. Kind of. I've heard of those shows and most of them are before my time, but I still know the basic premise of each of them. 3. For sure. Figured it would be something like the challenge from Season 4 where they had to cook in a steakhouse. 4. Something pasta related or a salad of some sort. I always want to branch out with more vegetarian dishes, but I never do. 5. Yes, but I enjoyed seeing Zooey and Natalie, so I'm okay with it. 6. For them it may have be fun, but not knowing anyone there, I probably wouldn't have really been enjoying myself. 7. I think I missed that ad. Sounds like it could be fun to watch. 8. Kevin. He's just awesome and I really, really hope he wins.

Is 2 hours not enough time for them to have made some homemade pasta or something? I was surprised that most chefs seems to just put out plates of veggies. If she said she was vegan, that might be a different story. But other than Michael's polenta, I don't recall seeing many/any carbs, etc.

1. Awesome. He's brilliant, happy, funny, and jolly. 2. The older I get, the more I meet people my age who don't watch TV. For the first two years of law school, I didn't have a TV, so I'm not surprised. 3. Of course I would have. And that was horrible. 4. Two words: TAKE OUT. 5. Yes. Why don't they just say "we want you to cook vegetarian"? We really need a famous random celebrity? Lame. I did, however, like to see Natalie next to Tom. She's 5' 3", so Tom must be rather wee. 6. I'm not wild about such parties, particularly with fellow-diners I've not met before. Among old friends, fine. 7. There are some chefs that I'm not wild about seeing again. I'd like to see a lot of them, but there are few I could do without. 8. I want Bryan to win. I'm an older sibling with a punk-ass kid brother, and I want to see him take it for us older kids out there. A few more things I never want to hear again (either next week or when they bring people back, or frankly, on reruns): Mike Isabella's "whatever, whatever", Robin's "I'm still here", and ANYBODY'S "I did this in culinary school."
