Last weekend I attended a potluck-style picnic on the coast. I brought three dishes; two required a sharp knife and the third needed a bowl for serving. Instead of purchasing a disposable knife and bowl, I decided to simply bring my everyday kitchenware. To ensure they weren't lost, I labeled both items.
I placed a piece of a clear scotch tape on the side of the knife and the bottom of the bowl. With a sharpie, I wrote my name. After the party, if one of my friends ended up with the tools, she would know it belonged to me.

grandmothers have been labelling tupperware since the beginning of time, no?
1The issue with tape is that it is easily removed. Last Christmas my sister gave me a Pyrex pan on which she had etched my last name. It's really easy to do, just some vinyl letters and etching solution from your local craft store. And that never comes off. As far as knives, I'd probably get a cheap one and engrave it, or a wood-handle and burn our name into the wood. Again, that tool is pretty cheap and would make a great gift. And plastic, well, it's easy (cheap) to replace.
2I should do that with my flatmates.
One of my friends grabbed a few of my kitchen stuff
when moving out of our flat, I was pretty pissed off.
3I wrap rubber bands around things/handles of things that are mine
4If you're worried about losing your utensils/dishes, you can always go to the the dollar store and pick up semi-disposable things to take to a potluck.
5LOL, every time we go to our family reunion, I bring some sort of dish to pass. I have to be careful to label it with my first AND last name so I don't end up taking my MIL's dishes home (she only has her last name on the bottoms of her dishes). I just use a Sharpie, but on my tools I stick those address labels that I get from various charity organizations on the handles.
6Good idea.
7I use address labels and scotch tape.
8I've had to start doing this when I take things to work. Serving utensils have a funny way of walking off before the end of the day.
9I always use disposable when going to a potluck, but I brought a pretty pie plate once and just kept a really close eye on it.
10I go with disposable too. I've had so many nice dishes that people have said they'll wash and return later, which I have labelled, that have not been returned. Some have denied having them then they've bought them out when I've visited them! Grrr
11My mom and aunts always label their initials on the bottom of their pots and lids with nail polish.
