Starbucks Splash Stick: Love It or Hate It?

Starbucks recently rolled out their new splash sticks, and our very own PetSugar is gaga for them. They're like stirring sticks only with a special plug on the top to keep coffee from spilling out. I think it's a genius idea — I have a hard time walking without spilling stuff all over myself — but I can see where some of you might dislike it. It's creating more waste and isn't very green. So what do you think? Are you into this stirring stick?

One more piece of the preexisting three - that's lid, cup, sleeve and now stick - to each cup of coffee that goes in the trash. Even if the stick comes from recycled material you still have to use energy (and any dyes - it's green) to make it. Disgusting! Just invest in a reusable, washable thermos. Your coffee will stay closer to ideal temperature, no spills, they come in designs... I'm headed to the Starbucks site to make some noise.

Jeez, I'm soooo late on commenting on this. I didn't even know this thing was out there, but I LOVE it. I just discovered Starbucks had this 2 weeks ago! I'm *so* behind. LoL. But I love it because I often ride the bus so it would prevent spills. When I was attending another school 2 years ago, I would ride the bus, and put my finger over the mouth hole, but it would always spill. Grrr! I'm glad that they provide this now. :-)

The last thing I thought about was the "waste" factor and I'm still not caring about it. The fact is, I don't get coffee all over my car when I hit a bump or pot hole. It works for me! PS: I'm not sure it's the safest thing to have your finger on the cup while driving...

Its a great idea. Im not a coffee drinker anymore though, so it doesnt matter to me.

I have dyspraxia (A known nerve problem) and I almost never spill, you know in chemistry we get courses in "Green Chemistry" I see this as a waste and EVERYONE has to do their bit for climate change....You can recycle used beans in compost as well. I do it when doing it at home. Travel cups rule! although I do have a habit of overfilling my mug a bit too much

They are amazing. I always used to spill coffee when picking it up for co-workers, and I was always so annoyed that when I was going out of my way to do something nice that it backfired. Now that Starbucks has these, I will go out of my way to get Starbucks over other coffee places.

A nifty idea, and yet it appears to me as just one more gimmick. I agree with the sticker or straw idea. I though I was the only one who used straws in a hot cup.:)

Cute! I only order double espressos when I go to starbucks, so I would never use them, but I still really like it!

Of COURSE I love it! You can always save it and reuse it people! Then it becomes quite green after all :)

i think that it's a pretty smart idea, the only downfall is that if you use it and then take it out and then want to use it again, you have to figure out what to do with the wet stick....

a local guy from my area pitched starbucks with the idea, which they stole then patented, according to the local guy. not sure how I feel about it.

I always spill the coffee when I'm walking with it. I like this idea. What's stopping them from using recycled material to make the sticks?

Sigh, coffee is such a wasteful business. I hate how Starbucks just keeps creating more ways to make people's lives easier/lazier but just ends up wasting more resources. Buying a travel mug is a very good coffee investment and will save you lots of money over time if you can manage not to lose it. PLUS they're spill-proof.

I THINK I WOULD SAVE MINE. MOST LIKELY I WOULD WASH IT AND KEEP IT IN A LITTLE ZIPLOCK IN MY PURSE. I WOULD NOT WANT TO WASTE THAT MUCH PLASTIC.

What I don't understand is how people can go to starbucks (or any coffee shop) day in and day out and STILL not have a tumbler??? They're pretty cheap, you can clean them at the office when you're done, and they have this fancy little lid where nothing will get out. Plus they keep your coffee warmer longer.

I agree! It's a waste of materials. In all the time we haven't had these little doodads, haven't we found some way to not spill the loveflow? *ahem*USE YOUR FINGER!*ahem*.

well if I am buying for work and I have to put them in the car in trays I just ask for their stickers...they seal and keep things hot....NO SPILLS :) but if you're using it as a stir stick too??? But I have ben doing the sticker thing since 95 at Starbucks so i have no need for the newfangle stick.

I don't get what's so hard about trying to keep your coffee cup steady. If you REALLY want to be secure then get your own mug! They're even more secure than these dumb plugs AND are reusable, plus if you bring it in to Starbucks you get a couple cents off your drink.
