Starbucks to Do Smoothies, Subway to Do Coffee

With reality stars posing as fashion designers and singers turning into restaurateurs, it's no surprise that Starbucks and Subway would expand into something other than caffeinated beverages and sandwiches.

With reality stars posing as fashion designers and singers turning into restaurateurs, it's no surprise that Starbucks and Subway would expand into something other than caffeinated beverages and sandwiches. Tomorrow Starbucks is scheduled to launch a new smoothie line. Called Vivanno Nourishing Blends, the smoothies come in two flavors: Orange Mango Banana and Chocolate Banana.

Scrambling to increase sales with innovative new products like smoothies, Starbucks has reason to worry: Subway is testing out a cafe concept. The Subway cafes will be larger than the existing sandwich shops with comfortable seating, wi-fi, espresso drinks, gelatos, and paninis. Subway isn't the first fast-food chain to expand into coffee, both McDonalds and Burger King have been heavily promoting coffee drinks.

What do you think about these announcements? Will you try a Starbucks smoothie or Subway coffee?

Pants Dance Video Game by Subway

If we could all really "digest" the message of a healthy lifestyle/diet from a video game, life would truly be sweet.

If we could all really "digest" the message of a healthy lifestyle/diet from a video game, life would truly be sweet. So sweet in fact we would probably never overindulge in cake and milkshakes. Ahhhh, what a dreamer I can be. Cake, milkshakes and even french fries are just a few of the items to avoid while playing the online video game produced by Subway titled Pants Dance. The pants in the title are Jared's, of course.

The spokesman for Subway's healthy sandwich line is retiring his famous fat pants that were featured prominently in print and TV ads. Jared has kept off the 245 pounds that he began losing ten years ago. To celebrate, Subway created a video game where you try to catch healthy food including yogurt, water, and of course Subway sandwiches as well as sneakers and dumbbells, in your pants to lose weight. However you must also avoid unhealthy foods and the accessories of unhealthy lifestyle choices, which include a video game controller.

Hats off to Jared for taking the weight off! The game is fun, but the message is even better. I wouldn't waste my time on the game. I would actually put on my sneakers and grab my hand weights for a circuit workout. But that is just me.

Dogs

This Pooch Has Some Nerve. . .

There's no owner in sight.

There's no owner in sight. The dog's taking up two seats on the train and he ain't moving anytime soon, cuz he's out like a light. Meanwhile, paying customers are forced to grab hold of a rail and stand while the train is in transit. You think he's gonna plant himself down on some nasty-ass public transit floor? Think again, humans. (Is this the canine response to our deadbeat feline friend?)

Would You Use WiFi on Public Transportation?

It looks like Engadget has gotten a tip that San Francisco's BART is currently running a WiFi trial.

It looks like Engadget has gotten a tip that San Francisco's BART is currently running a WiFi trial. If it works, it could be a model for other public transportation systems across the country, meaning you could be surfing the internet on free WiFi during your morning commute. As someone who uses trains and buses often with an iPhone, I'm really excited about this possibility (although it still stings that we don't have free citywide WiFi yet!). What about you guys? Would all you subway and public trans riders use this?

Subway's New Green Line

Subway recently announced a commitment to make itself a little more green.

Subway recently announced a commitment to make itself a little more green. The chain's first "eco-store" opened earlier this month in Kissimmee, Florida, and it includes many environmentally friendly lighting and heating methods, as well as recycled products and furnishings. They've worked in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for the eco-stores. The store will also give Subway a chance to measure energy and water savings against a regular Subway nearby.

In addition to the new eco-store, Subway also announced that it will now use paper napkins made from 100 percent recycled materials, and has switched the materials used in its cutlery and plastic drinking cups. These little replacements will save more than 610,000 pounds of resin and 13,000 barrels of oil per year.

All of these alterations, along with several other initiatives, are part of Subway's new eco-friendly policy. Here's more:

"We have made a commitment as a brand to become even more
environmentally accountable," said Bill Schettini, Chief Marketing Officer
for the Subway chain. "With more locations in the United States than any
other restaurant chain, and more than 28,000 worldwide, we are in a
position to make a significant and positive global impact on the
environment and the world around us."

So what do you guys think? Do you applaud Subway's new green exterior?

Cell Phone Software Threatens Gropers

"Excuse me, did you just grope me?"

"Excuse me, did you just grope me?" "Groping is a crime," "Shall we head to the police?" These are just a few of the messages included in the Anti-Groping program by games developer Takahashi, according to ABC News. In Japan this free download ranks as number seven in a top 10 cell phone applications list, as many women are flashing these messages to warn subway gropers to back off. They can also press an anger icon which plays a warning chime with the message.

First off, I had no idea that there were alot of dirties on congested subway trains in Japan. Secondly, since when does a message on your cell phone scare off perverts?! I'd love to try it out here and see how effective it is!

Cell Phone Reception In Subways: Yay or Nay?

The Metropolitan Transport Authority announced on Wednesday that they would be wiring 277 underground stations in the subway system for cell phone use.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority announced on Wednesday that they would be wiring 277 underground stations in the subway system for cell phone use. According to The New York Times, the cell phone signal will only work in subway stations, as the subway tunnels will not be wired, so commuters can ride in peace. This subway upgrade will start in six downtown Manhattan stations in two years and then when all the glitches are ironed out, Transit Wireless will have four more years to complete the rest of the underground stations. The main reason for the estimated $150-$200 million dollar improvement is to help people stay connected, especially when there is an emergency. I think this should be implemented in all subway stations, and I like the fact that it doesn't mean you'll be stuck listening to a person gabbing next to you while traveling.
