I agree, anon, an apartment is not necessarily a temporary living space, particularly for many people who live in big cities. And, even if it is temporary, temporary can mean five years or more. Moving is annoying and I've learned (through having moved many times) that it's much better to find an apartment with everything you want than to just settle for something that's just OK. I plan on living in my current apartment until I have enough saved for a substantial down payment on a condo. And, living in D.C., that will mean at least two years in my apartment, maybe more, as the cheapest condos I've looked at (older studios) are about $300,000 (being in a safe neighborhood and having access to public transportation are both important to me). And yes, I know a lot of other cities are even more expensive!Anyway, I'm rambling, but yes, finding an apartment you really love is important. That being said, I think one or two of these kitchens weren't that bad.

doogirl, an apartment is not defined as a temporary living space. Not everyone dreams of owning a home. In many places in the world (especially big cities) it is quite normal to rent your whole life. When I looked for my apartment, one of my top priorities was finding a good kitchen. Just because I rent doesn't mean I don't deserve a good place to cook. I don't need a dishwasher and microwave, but at least a good counter space and decent appliances. Those kitchens would be perfect for people who eat out every meal though.

Holy f***. I've been jealous of your SF living with your winter farmers markets and awesome restaurants, but jeesh, those kitchens are unacceptable. The best one is probably the one with the wooden cabinets. Maybe you need to convert living room space to kitchen.

I too have been looking for a new apartment with an amazing kitchen. I finally found a victorian in nopa w/brand new updated kitchen. stainless steel appliances...no dishwasher but I have never had one. Keep searching they are out there!

sadly, at least half of those kitchens looked like heaven compared to my tiny apartment kitchen. i am taller than my fridge and a cookie sheet won't fit in my oven unless the door stays open

It's an apartment, which is supposed to be a temporary living place until you find a home. There were a couple of kitchens that had everything you wanted, they just didn't look pretty or were big enough. It's San Fransisco, suck it up and enjoy the perks of living in a big city!

I guess it is a good thing you aren't living in Japan, where you run the very real risk of not having an oven, or a dishwasher. :)

Sadly, very few of the cute converted Victorians have updated kitchens in SF. If a modernized kitchen is really focusing your search, you have to look in some of the apartment complexes that were built in the 1990s or after. SOMA is a good neighborhood to start!
