Because I had a coupon to try Jamba Juice's new oatmeal for a buck, and because Monday in San Francisco started with a serious chill, I decided to mix up my usual cold cereal routine and try this warm treat for a change.
Jamba has been advertising this organic oatmeal generously in its storefronts, and the photos of creamy oats topped with fruit enticed me. You can choose from apple-cinnamon, blueberry-blackberry, or banana, all enhanced with "brown sugar crumble."
As you can tell, the genuine article (at right) didn't exactly match Jamba Juice's description or the photos. To see what it's supposed to look like, and to hear what I thought, read more.
Below, is how the oatmeal is pictured online: a nice little cup of oatmeal, topped with a dollop of seemingly fresh fruit and sprinkled with crumbly brown sugar. But rather than a crumble, I got what looked like brown sugar served with a melon baller — and way too much of it.

The fruit, which I mistakenly assumed would be fresh, was actually a jam-like fruit compote better suited to a cobbler. It was somewhat gelatinous and also quite sugary; now I understand why this oatmeal is 280 to 290 calories, something that perplexed me at first. Though the banana version uses fresh fruit, the apple-cinnamon topping is also a premade "compote."
Too bad, because the oatmeal itself was good: nutty and chewable and rich in earthy flavor. But it was hard to taste with the mixed berry goo invading from the top. I'd much rather have the oatmeal on its own, or topped with real fruit. It was definitely better than instant oatmeal, and the hearty portion kept me full, but I don't know that it was worth $3. Good thing I only paid a buck.

Lom Bok
Yikes! That's a LOT of sugar.
I couldn't even tell what was in that cup (the black gooey
stuff).
1I think I'm going to stick to my quaker oats. That pictures does not look appetizing.
2Mmm tar
3That looks scary. I agree with KadBunny, it does look like tar. A big cup of lumpy tar topped with a hard spoonful of brown sugar.
4The apple and banana ones look fantastic.
5oh... that looks... not at all like yogurt. I thought it was an ice cream sundae at first glance.
6I'd try the banana and only the banana. I agree that the picture of the real thing (not the ad) is quite scary and resembles something used to repair roads.
7I also thought at first that was a vanilla wafer or ginger snap on top... which it might as well be!
8I always get happy when girls agree with me :'D Seriously though, good for them trying something new and (kinda) healthy but we can do this ourselves.
9I completely agree. Jam and oatmeal aren't meant to be together
10@shmoo15: I disagree - I sometimes stir jam into my oatmeal. I just don't it in the quantities shown above.
11That looks foul.
12it's always such a disappointment when you see things like this and they just don't live up to your hopes. i think that i'll pass on this one too - i find that i can get canned 'loose' oatmeal pretty cheap anyway, and hot water at work is free.
13I've had the banana version, which does live up to the pictures. Actually, last time I was there they were out of fresh bananas and they offered to make it with frozen bananas instead. It turned out better than with the fresh bananas. The frozen ones melted into the oatmeal and cooled it enough to eat comfortably while imbuing the entire bowl with banana flavor. I highly recommend it.
As for the brown sugar crumble, it looks like whoever prepared your was just overzealous. I've ordered the oatmeal from two different Jamba Juice location in the Phoenix area and never gotten a chunk of sugar like that. It's always been a light sprinkling.
14That doesn't even look remotely like oatmeal. I can see why it's so high in calories...it's mostly jam and brown sugar! It's probably better to just fix yourself a bowl of quick oats and mix in a little bit of fresh fruit and a spoonful of brown sugar. It's cheaper, too.
15Eeww, the amount of sugar!
I eat my oatmeal with all kinds of things, so I would also have it with compote (without the added sugar of course). When eating out, I'd prefer the fresh fruit options, because then I can be sure they don't add stuff I don't want, like coloring, gelling agents, sugar.
16Is it Cold or Warm Oatmeal?
It doesn't look like something I'd be interested in. Though, I am a HUGE fan of Oatmeal, I would have definitely passed that coupon on to a friend.
I do fancy Oatmeal with Brown Sugar, Generous Helping of Sliced Bananas, & Raisins ... as well as, Oatmeal with Brown Sugar & Caramelized Apple, with Apple Crunch
17I love banana nut oatmeal, so maybe I'd try the banana flavor...otherwise, I kind of think it looks gross. There's way too much fruit jelly stuff in that top photo.
18im glad you got to use the coupon.. its a good deal for $1 i think, and my personal fav is apple cinnamon b/c it tastes like apple pie. the berry one is really good too! i dunno, i like the sugar in the morning. its hot oatmeal, and its supposedly cooked for 40 min before serving.
19I saw that picture and was thinking 'that's oatmeal???'
20I have a huge sweet tooth and I sheepishly admit that your jammy, sugary oatmeal looks *really* tasty to me.
21yea i was wondering y it looks like that...thats no real oatmeal LOL
22yea i was wondering y it looks like that...thats no real oatmeal LOL
23haha that's hilarious. I thought it was actually a donut ball floating in black coffee at first sight. They didn't even fill it up to the top.
24Were you perhaps served by an inexperienced pimply careless teenager? I hope you at least lodged a complaint with the manager and made them aware of the picture and your unmatched resulting product
Eew!! Skipping that one! Thanks for the heads up.
25Thanks for reviewing this, I had a $1 coupon I was going to use but I think I'll just skip out!
26The Jamba near my house makes it more like the way it's supposed to. It was probably just that store or employee error. I've had the banana version and my fiance has had the berry version. We both like it, but if you want to go for a do it yourself version at home, I would recommend Trader Joe's Steel Cut Oatmeal (the frozen version that comes with 2 in a box) and add your own toppings. Much more economical and tastes about the same. Plus it doesn't take much prep, just microwave the oatmeal and add toppings!
27I'd rather to my own oatmeal at home.
McCann's 3 minute oatmeal with a teaspoon of honey, and a handful of mixed dried fruit and nuts.
28Did not realize from the picture that it was oatmeal. I saw the ads for it when I was walking past Jamba the other day, now I'm glad I haven't tried 'er out. Ew.
29no thanks!!
30just had the blueberry/blackberry one today. i've got a maaaaad sweet tooth. i love it. i loved it so much that i went to the market to get a carton of the oats, quaker makes the steel cut oats, and i will just add fresh blueberries and some brown sugar. the syrup made the whole container taste yum, but it is a bit too much sugar. if you have a coupon, try it, if not, spend about $5.50 for the oats and make it at home.
31I've had all three kinds of their oatmeal. My berry one didn't look anything like your's... it really did look more like the picture and the crumbles were amazing. It looks to me like someone just threw a huge scoop of brown sugar into your's. Yuck. I love the banana one though.
I second the use of Trader Joe's frozen steel cut oats. They're delish and super easy to make (and I believe you get two for like $2.99 or something, not too bad for a healthy portion)!
32It looks a little bit disgusting...but I like the interesting fodd, so...YuMMy:P
33To be fair, you can't blame the entire company for one crappy local employee. You gotta remember that the HQ doesn't hire people, the individual managers of the stores do. Just gripe at the person who served it to you and make them do it over, and tell 'em to make it pretty like the picture
