Like Traci Des Jardins suggested, go to farmers markets when they're closing down. Farmers who don't want to carry produce home with them will be more willing to cut costs and make deals with you to liquidate their inventory.

These are some great tips Susannah! I'm generally of the "shop really late" persuasion, though perhaps more for lack of planning, that said, I will attest to getting some great deals this way! Also, I do agree that getting to know your farmers is key. Often just a few kind words makes a big difference; case in point, this weekend I was chatting with one of the vendors and he pointed me towards the perkiest bunches of basil he had on offer.
