Hit up smaller markets.

While I love the Ferry Building Farmers Market, it's one of the most famous greenmarkets in America, and it takes place on prime property, so stalls crowd up fast, and produce prices can be pretty expensive. I visit for inspiration, but when I'm looking for a bargain, I'll trek out to some of San Francisco's smaller, lower-profile markets.

These are some great tips Susannah! I'm generally of the "shop really late" persuasion, though perhaps more for lack of planning, that said, I will attest to getting some great deals this way! Also, I do agree that getting to know your farmers is key. Often just a few kind words makes a big difference; case in point, this weekend I was chatting with one of the vendors and he pointed me towards the perkiest bunches of basil he had on offer.
