I was recently at the new Oxbow Public Market in Napa, where I came across a little organic scoop shop from Three Twins Ice Cream. While the ice cream is smooth and delicious, it was actually the absurdly expensive sundaes that caught my eye.
I asked the gal behind the counter if they've ever served an expensive sundae, and she said not yet, but she was sure it was bound to happen someday. The sundae costs $3,333.33 and consists of a banana split made with syrups from three rare dessert wines, served with an ice cream spoon from the 1850s. If you give them a day's notice, they'll even have a cellist play while you eat it. If you think the cost is too absurd — it is on the "absurdity" menu, after all — maybe it'll help to know that 1/3 of the price is being donated to a local land trust.
If, however, you think this is too tame to be considered the world's most expensive ice cream sundae, then perhaps the $60,000 "World's More Expensive Most Expensive Ice Cream Sundae" will pique your interest. To find out what all that cash will buy you, read more.
For $60,000 you can travel to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, where the Three Twins Ice Cream founder will handchurn a batch of ice cream using the glacial ice found at the summit. The cost includes first class airfare to Tanzania, five-star accommodations, a guided climb, all the ice cream you can eat, and an organic T-shirt, of course. Oh, and you can bring a friend for a mere $25,000 more. It should also be noted that a portion of the purchase will go to an African environmental nonprofit.
So tell me, if you had the money, is this something you'd do? I know I would!

Coast
me too! this is awesome, and if i had money coming out of my ears (like some people in napa!) i'd totally do it!
1Hmm, I dunno. I guess it depends on how much ice cream you get!
2crazy, but i'd totally do it if i was swimmimng in dough!!
3No gold or diamonds? The million dollar martini has gold and diamonds. Take that fancy ice cream.
4If I had $85,000 to donate to a great cause, I would absolutely ask my husband to get this for my birthday.
5I guess if I won the lottery tomorrow and I had some extra cash to spend, then I might buy the $3333.33 sundae. But the $60,000 one is ridiculous no matter how rich you are!
6That is a lot of money.
7No thanks. Even if I had all the money in the world. Just not interested in eating part of a glacier that is melting away.
8that's way too much money for ice cream. i like my ice cream, but i'll find another way to eat it than to travel to mt. kilimanjaro.
9That's a lot of money. I'd probably go for the $1,000 sundae at Serendipity 3 in NYC. If it's as good as their frozen hot chocolate...
10That's so funny!
11This might explain why a lot of rich people are fat as Violet Beaureguard (post-blueberry dessert bubblegum).
12If I made that much in two weeks of working, or less (so, had a pretty great salary, thus rich), HELL YES. That seems really fun, and I love ice cream and trips!
13The Twinasaurus (20 scoops of ice cream in a pot!) sounds better than the sundae that costs $3,333. Although having a cellist play while you eat would be quite interesting--which I assume everyone within earshot of you and the restaurant would be able to hear it for FREE, while you foot the bill.
And if I had more money than I knew what to do with, I would blow $85,000 on the Tanzania trip. If anything but to see founder make your ice cream for you, and use the natural ice to do so. AMAZING idea if you ask me.
14Geez! That's Extravagant! but at least it's for a good cause.
15For that money I can travel to Iceland or anywhere near the Arctic, bring back a piece of glacier and make my own ice cream!!
16Hahaha hilarious!!!! It's almost worth it for the first class tickets alone, considering the cost of 1st class travel these days
LOL
17If I had the money, yes ... and then I would send two people less fortunate than me to experience it since the awareness and fund raising is more important than indulging in ice cream.
18that description reads like a joke. I had to reread it a couple of times before realizing it was serious. The part about the cellist is especially silly.
19Anyone find it odd that they talk about how the glacier is dissapearing, and they want to save it, yet the ice cream is being made using this glacier?
20This is a lot more ecologically responsible than the most expensive ice cream sundae at Serendipity 3 in New York... It contains edible gold flecks, three types of extremely rare cocoa, & is served in a collector's goblet with a diamond-encrusted spoon you can take home as a souvenir. Many celebrities, especially internationals, have taken them up on this, & no money goes to charity.
21If I had the $$$ I would so get BOTH of these! Not really for the ice cream, but for the experience. I'm thinking though that if they didn't donate a portion of the cost, I wouldn't do it. That has a lot to do with my liking this.
22I fi had enough money to be able to do something like this, I believe I would skip the whole trip and ice cream thing and just give the $60 or $80,000 directly to that charity instead of just having a "portion" of the proceeds go to the charity.
23These are awesome. I would love to get me one of the $60,000 ones.
24
25I soooo would!!
26Throw in David Beckham serving it to me, and I'm there!
27Thats it, Im f*ckin doin it!! See you on kilimanjaro!!
28if these glaciers are dissappearing then why are we eating them
29wow that is so werid why would someone pay that much money for ice cream that MIGHT last you a day or two
30I think that is really stupid. Unless you plan to feed all the starving kids in the world spending that amount of money is absurd. I pity the fool who buys it, because they are selfish and stupid.
31I have to agree with Sheretta. It sounds like a complete waste of money and incredibly stupid. If you want to donate money, just donate it. Don't go buying some extravagent ice cream! Then again, I'm one of those who wouldn't want a mansion if I had the money. Too much hassle & worry.
