Would You Rather Eat Mashed or Sweet Potatoes?

It's Nov. 1, and I'm happy to say our Thanksgiving coverage starts now! Turkey day is my favorite holiday, and you can rest assured that over the next 26 days we will be providing the best Thanksgiving recipes, tips, how tos, and ideas to make your meal a memorable one. To kick things off I want to know what starchy side — mashed or sweet potatoes — you prefer on Thanksgiving.

I love sweet potatoes without marshmallows. I like mashed potatoes, but I am pretty particular about the type of potato. I like smashed red potatoes, or just roasted. Regular mashed potatoes are a bit too creamy for my preference.

mmmmmmmm I LOVE LOVE LOVE mashed potatoes. i like them really creamy and hot with either butter, gravy or both! and with a piece of turkey or roast beef on the fork with them... omg i'm in heaven! my friend also made great fluffy mashed potatoes by putting cream cheese in them, it was always his offering for the christmas potluck we had with our friends at university. mmmm

Mashed potatoes! Like a couple of others that posted, I too hate sweet potatoes. I don't like any sweet food except for dessert!

I prefer yams over sweet potatoes anyway, but baked potatoes are great too!

My grandmother makes sweet potatoes like baked potatoes but with brown sugar and margarine instead of butter and salt and they are soooooooooooo good!!!

I'm with FinnLover. I absolutely LOVE mashed potatoes! But I don't like sweet potatoes, and they're sooo good for you. I wish I did.

At Thanksgiving, I like mashed potatoes better because I don't care for the caramelized/overly sweet sweet potatoes that my mom makes, but I love her mashed potatoes (she puts mayo in them and they're so moist and yummy). Ordinarily, I prefer sweet potatoes, though...nice and plain-roasted.

Curses to you Yum! I love both and hate to choose. We eat them all year and I do love them with marshmallows, toasted pecans and lots of butter. Don't forget a drizzle of maple syrup. :drool: And thank you for not calling them yams - that drives me nuts (and I don't have far to go).
