You Accidentally Order Something Out of Your Comfort Zone, Now What?

Recently my girlfriend went to sushi with her BF. She made the mistake of ordering a roll that featured unagi — Japanese eel — as the main ingredient. She didn't want to send it back, but it was definitely not something she felt comfortable eating. Luckily her boyfriend ended up eating the unagi, however her story left me wondering. What do you do when you accidentally order something out of your comfort zone?

It depends on how the unwanted ingredient is added. If it's something like an anchovy on the side of a Greek salad I'll just pick it off, but if it's something that's more blended with the entire dish I'll send it back. That almost never happens though, because I'm not that picky an eater.

I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. I'll try anything once. Having a weird dish will make for an interesting meal, at least. :)

mmm...eel is good. I'm usually not afraid to try new stuff. I ate jellyfish not too long ago and I liked it. It depends on what you're comfortable eating. Don't be afraid to try new stuff, you might like it!

i never send anything back, fear of what will happen to it (or whatever i exchange it for) in the kitchen. when i get something i don't like i eat the parts i can tolerate or order something additional (or a big dessert).

I eat anything... just not shitty chain-made fast food. I eat octopus, sushi, ox tails, mushrooms... whatever... I base it on the quality. not the TYPE.

I definitely agree with everyone who has said they would at least try it. Who knows, it become your new favorite thing? And if not, there are many worse things than sampling something distasteful.

I'd try it. I might not like it but you never know... I avoided anchovies all my life and then one day decided to crack open a can of them and stick them on a pizza. They were salty but tasty! And if I made the mistake of ordering it at a restaurant, it sure isn't the waiters fault... I would never ever send something back that I actually ordered. Then again, I never mistakenly order stuff. As for unagi, that's my favorite roll on the entire Japanese menu. :P To me, ordering weird stuff at a Japanese restaurant is part of the appeal.

I'd try it. My mom always said to try something at least once before I decided I didn't like it. Then if I still didn't like it then it's my fault for not being more careful when ordering.

I did this once and ordered lobster lasanga - I've never had lobster before (which is kinda weird of me, I guess) and I'm seafood-phobic, but it looked good and we were in a really nice restaurant, so I laughed it off to the server, who immediately offered to take it back, and I was like no, let me try it first. It was sooooo good!

If i ordered something and I forgot to ask them to remove an item, or if it has something I know i dont want and cant be removed(mustard, for example) I would admit my mistake, return it, and leave a better tip. If its something new and foreign id probably eat it though. Its also probably not a good idea to order sushi without knowing what it is if youre creeped out by certain things.

I usually ask about things I do not understand. I would only send it back or just leave it untouched if I knew it would really make me sick(I have colitis, food runs through me at warp speed a lot).

I would never order anything by accident. I am a very plain and picky eater so I always know exactly what I am ordering because I ask a lot of questions and repeat my order many times.

Unless it's cooked wrong I don't think it's ok for you to send it back simply because you changed your mind. It's a loss for the restaurant when it's your fault for not reading the menu properly. Really not ok to send food back unless it's the restaurant's fault like if the food is raw, burned, etc. It seems that the unagi situation was you friends fault and if her BF didn't eat it she should have just paid for it and ordered something else.

I hate it when people send back food.. I find it so classless. How can you order something or not have the sense to ask about if your confused.

I did that once. I accidently got salmon roe istead of smelt roe. I LOVE smelt roe, but salmon roe tastes like a dirty swamp to me. So I explained the mistake and they fixed it. I said thank you to the sushi chef, and left a couple extra bucks for the server. It was all good. I also go to that sushi bar quite a bit, so they knew me, maybe that helped?

I love Brussels sprouts!! people should not fear them, they are delicious. I got a sushi roll of fermented soy beans just to try, allergic to fish, It was gross, but I tried it and i will never get it again, but if i hadn't tried it I would have never known!

depending on how much of the dish is the item I don't care for I'd either try a bite or pick it off. I'm willing to try something new.

Since i am really picky about what i eat i wouldn't order something that i didn't know what i was ordering. But if by some chance i did i would not send it back because it was my mistake. I might pick out parts of it that i would eat.

I'd at least try it, then pick off whatever if I didn't like it (or pass it off to someone else. My BF will eat anything if it's meat and you don't tell him what it is).
