Are You Making an Edible Gift This Year?

From chocolate truffles to cherry bounce, we are pulling out all the stops with our edible gift ideas. In 2008 we gifted Kahlua and smoky cashews, and now I want to know: are you making any edible gifts this holiday season?

This year (2010) I made homemade coffee liqueur (AKA "kahlua") and homemade cherry liqueur/cherry bounce...both from YumSugar recipes. :) No lemons on the trees in my orchard, so no limoncello this year. :( However, I might make homemade gin instead, or use the YumSugar recipe for homemade Irish Cream Liqueur. :) A jar each of homemade pumpkin butter, applesauce, and chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce will finish off the gift box. Hopefully the recipients will enjoy it all... :)

Baskets or buckets containing avocados, grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons...all grown on our trees. Jars of homegrown and homemade salsa (red and green) and jars of homemade jams or fruit spread. We've not had anyone turn up their noses at our offerings. ;) Actually, folks start 'hinting' in September: "Am I on the list? Don't forget me!" I also took plates of muffins and cinnamon rolls to some friends on New Year's Eve so they would have a sweet start to the New Year. :)

I'm baking people pies (apple or pumpkin) this year, same thing I did last year and the year before.

honestly, if someone gave me a homemade gift such as all these edibles above, Id be in heaven, they all sound sooo good! And living on my own and not being able to afford much food, homemade edible gifts are a blessing!!! :-)

I'm making hot chocolate mixes and kahlua! I'm also thinking of making granola because all these things can be made wayyy ahead of time.^_^

I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes (I'm 3 months pregnant) which means I have to avoid sweets until the baby is born in June. I'm a huge baker and usually make several kinds of cookies plus other stuff for Christmas, but this year, if I can't eat them, NO ONE CAN!!! ;)

And btw, a home made gift is almost always more appreciated than a store bought one! (by not-so-shallow people, anyway)

Georgia's Peach. That is so sweet of you. I always found that homemade cookies always traveled very well. If it were me I would do classic chocolate chip w/o nuts in case of allergies. Soft gingerbread cookies, even fudge travels good. I hope this helps you and have a blessed holiday!

Hello, My son is in the United States Navy. I don't have much money, but I want to make him something. He loves home cooked food, but can't find much of it where he is stationed (San Diego, CA). I need help with some great ideas for sweet treats for my son and his friends. I cook pretty good, so my kids and others say. I will be mailing them overnight by Monday Dec. 21. to get there before Christmas. So give me some ideas that will keep for the long haul. Thanks, Georgia Peach

Pumpkin bread for my grannies, and something as yet to be determined for others.

I spend this afternoon baking blondies with green and red M&M's and double fudge brownies for all my co-workers! It was my first time making edible gifts, and the packaging was really cute. What a great idea!

Fudge, peppermint bark, and biscotti!

I spent 4 hours making truffles for my coworkers. I'm going to make more truffles, plus some peanut butter cups and a few other candies, for my family members. I guess to someone who equates store-bought stuff with love, it might be disappointing... but to the less-superficial among us, homemade stuff is a testament to how much we care about our families and friends. It's not like it's really super-cheap, either... I spent well over $20 on the truffle ingredients, not counting the stuff I had on-hand.

Wow, mamasitamali, sorry we're all so tacky spending a lot of time AND effort AND money to create something that we actually put some thought into instead of buying a premade gift that might have taken five minutes to pick out and is probably a lot less personal.

i'm making rye bread and canning jam for my family, I'm a newlywed with a low budget!!

sorry I think I might be the only person on the planet who thinks that edible gifts scream "sorry you weren't important enough to buy a real gift". its just so tacky to me. bringing food as a contribution to an event, fine. but as a wrapped "this is what I got for you this year" gift I hate it.

I made peppermint fudge for my coworkers and cinnamon hazelnut crescents for my family. And I'll be making a batch of toffee later this week as well.

I make peanut butter fudge, chocolate fudge, almond cookies, chex mix, peanut butter balls (a family tradition), peppermint bark, and these awesome chocolate covered ritz crackers with peppermint bits sprinkled on top.

My staff is all getting peppermint bark, tiger butter and peanut butter cups. Management is getting a selection of jalapeno jelly, fig preserves and cheddar shortbread. Secret Santa gift is all of the above items and also decorative spreader knives and a bottle of wine.

I'm going to try the pomegranate jelly and maybe some salted caramel truffles.

edible gifts are going to be the easiest and most inexpensive thing for office coworkers and extended family. im leaning towards chocolate dipped peppermint sticks with chopped nut topping

im looking for recipes so that i can make some stuff for my boyfriends family. they all got me presents, and unfortunately i do not have the cash flow to buy them all gifts, but they LOVE my food. h brown, do you think i can have your recipe for the Chocolate chip toffee shortbread??
