Time to Party . . . With a Zesty Taco Salad

Taco night is a rarity in my house. For some reason, I just can't wrap my head around getting all the ingredients prepared and laying everything out for easy assembly. Fortunately, I found a way to get my fill of taco night flavors in a fast and easy (and healthy!) salad form.

My recipes tend to be inspired by beautiful produce, and when I got my hands on some stunning purple radishes, I knew they would be a crisp and refreshing component of this salad. Jalapeño, garlic, and cumin bring a lot of flavor to ground beef, and it takes just minutes to come together.

For this simple recipe, keep reading.
Adventures in Ingredients: Aloe Vera

For weeks, I'd been eying these spiky succulent leaves at Berkeley Bowl. I always knew that aloe vera came from this common plant, but never thought I would actually need or want the opportunity to work with it myself. And then there's the whole issue of cooking with it and how to harvest it. It's popular in coconut water these days, but other than that, ingesting it is somewhat uncommon. But those who regularly eat or drink this strange succulent rave about its supposed health benefits, from healing acne to curing cancer.

I did a quick scan of the Internet on how to cut and prepare fresh aloe vera right from the leaf. I found several recipes for smoothies featuring fresh aloe vera pieces and one that served it poached with lime juice. A smoothie sounded more appetizing. Honestly, I got a little bit nervous when I found out that the dark red sap that apparently seeps out should not be ingested or it will cause unpleasant digestive issues. Still, I went for it.

Filleting this piece of aloe vera was a strange experience: I was on the lookout for that dark red sap, though I didn't ever encounter it. The aloe vera gel looked sticky and mucous, not delicious (or even edible). I'd read in a few places that aloe vera on its own is kind of bitter, so of course, I immediately cut off a piece and took a bite. It tasted like nothing, but I did notice a strange sensation in my mouth and my tongue went a little numb. To find out what I did with the fresh fillet of aloe vera, keep reading.

Some Like It Hot: Vote For Your Favorite Hot Sauce

It would seem that Americans like their food to pack quite a punch. At least, that's what we can assume based off of the fact that the hot sauce industry is one of the top 10 fastest growing industries in the country, right below social network game development. This got us thinking about the many different kinds of hot sauces there are available to us. While I reach for the Tapatío bottle several times a day, I know there happen to be several die-hard Cholula fans out there. We want to know: what's your favorite hot sauce?

Bread Winner: Easy, Addictive Breadsticks

Breadsticks aren't something that I think about very often. What I mean by that is often I overlook them for other, more exciting snacks or appetizers. But I've recently come to realize that a fresh batch of breadsticks is simple, uncomplicated, and completely addictive.

As far as bread goes, this definitely can be considered a fast and easy recipe. It takes just minutes to come together, followed by one hour of resting, then about 30 minutes of baking.

There are a few things that I think could really enhance this recipe: a sprinkling of sesame seeds or good kosher salt. I also upped the temperature a bit to 375° F (or you could roll your breadsticks thinner) because I found that they weren't crunching up as much as I would have liked.

Find this incredibly straightforward recipe when you read on.
Pepsi's New Frontier: Pepsi Next
Pepsi Next, which rolled out nationally March 26, is the newest addition to the Pepsi family. The so-called "midcalorie soda" is targeted toward drinkers who are cutting back on sugar, a dietary trend that's been holding steady in recent years. It's made with a combination of high-fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and sucralose, and has 60 percent less sugar than regular Pepsi.
As someone who's always chosen Pepsi over Coke, I pounced at the chance to try the newest addition to the Pepsi family. I grabbed a couple of office mates and every Pepsi product that I could find within a one block radius (Pepsi, Pepsi Max, and Diet Pepsi) for a casual taste test and comparison. Find out what we thought when you keep reading.

A Bloody Mary Experience
I've never really given Bloody Marys a fair shot.

There are a lot of die-hard fans who'll be completely appalled by that statement, but it's true. I've just always been slightly confused as to why anyone would ever want to mix tomato juice with vodka and add hot sauce. Why on earth people would want to drink that in the morning is beyond me. But in the interest of expanding my horizons, I bought all the ingredients and mixed one up.

What did I think of my first Bloody Mary? Find out when you keep reading.
