Cranberry Sauce Sour Cream Muffins

It seems we're all about ways to use up cranberries and cranberry sauce over here.

It seems we're all about ways to use up cranberries and cranberry sauce over here. FreshTart has provided us with a great way to use up leftover Thanksgiving cranberry sauce. The result is seriously mouthwatering muffins.

As I mentioned below, I had the pleasure of chatting all things leftovers on Saturday morning, on the Fresh & Local radio show, with host Susan Berkson and Mike Madison of local hip hop group Unknown Prophets. While Mike is a musician by trade, he is also a fantastic cook. His passion for teaching children about good food is completely contagious. We had a great time talking about cooking fresh food, reaching out to chefs like Mike DeCamp at La Belle Vie for ideas and tips, and how involving children in meal preparation is The Way to encourage them to try new and different foods.

Since I had a nice amount of cranberry sauce leftover, I made up a batch of muffins and took them with me to AM950. Despite the fact that I forgot to put sugar in them — I baked them at 6:30 am, hey — the muffins got the thumbs up from Mike and Susan, and from my family, to such a degree that I've made them twice more.

OnSugar Blog: Happy Thanksgiving!

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and MiaFT is one of them. This is an excerpt from one of the latest posts on her Baby Love blog.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  And I hope Audrey's outfit doesn't disappoint!  She's wearing H&M for UNICEF from head to toe.

Audrey loved her little kitten shoes and purse!  I could hardly get her to take them off!  I also got her the cute little scarf from the collection. She also had another smaller hair bow for the occasion.  As you know, it's all about the accessories!

I love this outfit!!  And Audrey loved it too!  It may be a bit much for some people, but I think that fashion is especially fun for kids.  They are so cute, they can get away with anything!

OnSugar Blog: A Baby Recipe — Potato, Sweet Potato & Tuna Pasta

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and CherylDee is one of them.

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and CherylDee is one of them. Here is one of the latest posts to her Lipsticks to Baby Bottles blog.

A few days ago I decided to try out a recipe I found online. It sounded delicious, well in a baby delicious sorta way! So let's jump right into it. Here's a list or more like pictures of the items you will need to create this dish for your bubs.

I know I did not state any carrots in the title, but I did add in some, purely just for color. Well and K loves carrots, but I added just a tiny bit. So there you have:

  • Heinz Baby Pasta Stars (You can get this from any leading supermarkets)
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Carrots (if you want)
  • Tuna in water or flakes if it's easier

So just chop up the items and pop them into a pot of boiling water. Chopping them up to smaller pieces makes it easier to mash up later when they're fully boiled. While your vegetables are boiling you can start doing your pastas in a separate pot. For one serving you can just use 1 tablespoon worth of pastas. Up to you if you prefer the stars version or the spaghetti.

Hidden Gem: Rhea's Deli in San Francisco

Rhea's Deli Sandwiches

It's no secret that Between the Bread is good at getting us excited about sandwiches, but she may have outdone herself with this mouthwatering gallery at Rhea's Deli in San Francisco.

Range may have a Michelin star, but Rhea's Deli, on the same block of Valencia in San Francisco's Mission District, has the underground gourmet grub. From the street, it looks like any old neighborhood market, but inside, it crafts big, brash sandwiches that meld very SF ingredients (like Acme bread) with exotic flavors like katsu pork and Korean marinated steak. Looking for some holiday dessert ideas? Check out some inspiration from A La Tart, who recently baked up a storm with a toasted mixed nut caramel tart.

Tis the season for pumpkin everything and pecan pies. So I did my own take on the festive favorites for my friend Julie when she said she needed some awesome desserts for a birthday party. The guest of honor loves nut desserts, so we went with a toasted mixed nut caramel tart (walnuts, almonds and pecans to be exact). I'll share the recipes soon, I promise!

A Tale of Three Tortas: Tortas en Mexico

How do tortas stack up when eaten in their country of origin, Mexico?

How do tortas stack up when eaten in their country of origin, Mexico? Between the Bread does a little investigating.

Since I'm mildly obsessed with spicy tortas, I couldn't let my first trip to Mexico end without trying a local sandwich. Though Zihuatanejo is more known for pozole and tacos al pastor, we heard good things about hole-in-the-wall Tortas Ziranda and hit it up for our last meal.

Markedly different from Nopalito, obviously, but far more authentic, Ziranda serves reasonably sized tortas on toasty grilled rolls. I ordered ham and cheese (pictured below), while Andrew got the Ziranda specialty of shredded pork and jam with two kinds of cheese (above)

OnSugar Blog: How to Stop Stressing Over Christmas Gifts

Stressing over Christmas shopping?

Stressing over Christmas shopping? OnSugar blog Beauty and the Budget gives us some great tips to saving on gifts.

Although Christmas is almost everyone's favorite holiday, with the increasing financial difficulties we face in this economy, it's getting harder and harder not to turn into a total Scrooge. I love buying gifts, but honestly, I don't have the money. And without being too much of a political-occupy-Wall Street type, the market has definitely turned this holiday into a money-making machine.

For a holiday that should be all about family, friends, and loved ones, there are a few simple solutions to making this holiday a little less stressful financially. Below are five ways you can save on Christmas gifts, and some of them, you may not have ever heard before!

  1. Donate to a charity, instead of buying everyone gifts. On Christmas, gather around the table with your loved ones and explain which charity you chose and why it means so much to you. One amazing charity to donate to is Operation Christmas Child. Anyone can do this, and you can each share a story about the gifts you chose for the child!
  2. Buy gifts just for the children. Whether you choose to buy gifts just for kids under 18 or under 12, you can save a lot of money by not having to buy the adults presents. Of course, for families like the Duggars, you may want to choose another option!
  3. Buy themed gift baskets for families. My mom's side of the family has done this before, and honestly, it's my favorite way of gift-giving. It's so simple and affordable to just to buy a gift basket for each family. For example, my Aunt and Uncle gave us a movie-themed gift basket one year complete with pajamas, movies, and popcorn for me, my mom, and my brother.
  4. Set a limit on the price of each gift. If you have a lot of people to buy for, you can require that everyone buy a gift under a certain amount, like $25. You can always find cool gifts at thrift stores, flea markets, and even Etsy!
  5. Buy everyone a gift card. Along the lines of setting a price limit for gifts, if you're one of those people who is never satisfied with your Christmas gifts or never knows what to buy anyone, gift cards are an easy solution!

How are you saving on Christmas this year? Share your ideas below!

OnSugar Blog: Tips on Choosing a Major For Adult Students

OnSugar blogger the college mom gives tips to adult students for choosing majors.

OnSugar blogger the college mom gives tips to adult students for choosing majors.

When I was an academic adviser, it never seemed to fail that at this time of the semester I would begin to see students coming to my office by the dozens searching for advice on choosing a major. I don't know what it is about this time but it really seems that students begin to focus on what course of study they should pursue right about now. It may have something to do with midterm exams taking place or it could be for a myriad of other reasons. Whatever the cause, now seems to be a time of great anxiety surrounding choosing a major. Let's discuss some ways to tackle the task and lessen the stress.

Take an Inventory

One of the first things I always recommend to students is taking a career inventory. A career inventory is kind of like a test that assesses your strengths, weaknesses and preferences and gives you a list of career types that may appeal to you. Career inventories don't tell you what you should do for a living; they merely produce ideas that may suit you based on your assessment results. Some examples of career inventories are the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory and the Strong Interest Inventory. See your career counselor or academic adviser for assistance in taking and interpreting such assessments.

Read on for more tips.

A 2-Ingredient Cranberry Mask That Smooths and Brightens

Check out this simple, smart, and seasonally appropriate cranberry facial recipe from OnSugar blog Beautiful Basics: Cranberries are not only healthy, tasty, and a Thanksgiving staple, they are also full of skin-beneficial ingredients.

Check out this simple, smart, and seasonally appropriate cranberry facial recipe from OnSugar blog Beautiful Basics:

Cranberries are not only healthy, tasty, and a Thanksgiving staple, they are also full of skin-beneficial ingredients. If you want a really great (and easy to make) skin treatment, just follow these super simple instructions.

What you need:

  • Half a cup of fresh cranberries
  • Half a cup of warm water
  • Puree the cranberries in a blender and strain. You need the liquid from the berries, not the chunks of fruit. Combine the water and cranberry juice and soak a washcloth or some cotton pads in the mixture. Apply the saturated cloth or cotton to your face (avoiding the delicate eye area). Sit back and relax for about 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. This will make your skin a little brighter and smoother, plus it’s an excuse to lay back and do nothing for a small chunk of time. Enjoy!

Debt Up to Your Eyeballs? 6 Steps to Managing Debt

Struggling with debt? OnSugar blog Beauty and the Budget gives us some great tips to managing debt.

Struggling with debt? OnSugar blog Beauty and the Budget gives us some great tips to managing debt.

Remember this old commercial? It's hilarious, and so true!

These frivolous spending habits certainly apply today. Think about it. You know these people—they're your neighbors, coworkers, family members, or maybe it's even you. You're to a point that you are sinking yourself into an unrealistic amount of debt. It's normal to have a house loan, car note, insurance, and student loan debt. Where we get ourselves into trouble is when we have a house and a car that we cannot afford. Let's face it, in our society we aren't just keeping up with the Joneses anymore — we're trying to keep up with the Kardashians! And that, beauties, is completely unrealistic.

Now of course, I'm not trying to lecture. I've seen what credit card debt can do, and I'm currently struggling to pay my student loans off when I don't even have a job with a decent (read anything above $25,000) salary! I know your pain, and it's extremely tough. But the best thing we can do is to not stress about it. Instead, we should learn to take a rational approach to handling our debt and getting it under control. Don't worry about having to get it paid off now, now, now! The key is learning to manage your debt.

So let's say you have a normal amount of debt or an abnormal amount of debt. Whatever your case, you have debt. Now, let's get it under control using these six steps

A Tale of Three Tortas: The $9 Nopalito Torta

We aren't the only ones who love Mexican sandwiches, or tortas; so does Between the Bread.

We aren't the only ones who love Mexican sandwiches, or tortas; so does Between the Bread.

I've been on a serious torta kick lately, devouring the Mexican sandwiches everywhere from my neighborhood to the Mission to Mexico itself. To show my deep appreciation for this delicioso dish, allow me to tell this tale of three tortas, starting at San Francisco's bourgie yet authentic Mexican eatery Nopalito.

Like a Mexican hoagie or a burrito on bread, tortas take South of the Border flavors and sandwich them in a soft, toasted roll, such as a telera or bolillo. Nopalito stays pretty true to tradition with its housemade bun, which contains adobo-seasoned shredded pork, refried beans, jack cheese, and avocado.

OnSugar Blog: What Defines a Good Mother?

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and CherylDee is one of them.

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and CherylDee is one of them. Here is one of the latest posts to her Lipsticks to Baby Bottles blog.

Compared to Westerners and Europeans, Asians tend to be more closed-minded. Even speaking about sex is such a taboo. Seeing young parents, especially mothers here, are somewhat frowned upon. Whereas I find it tends to be slightly more accepted in places out of Asia.

I wouldn't say I had a very traditional Asian upbringing. I mean I'm sure most of you have heard stories about how in Asian homes, children stay in their family home till they marry. As for me, I moved out of mine at 18. Anyways, what all this brings me to is that, I've been able to make my own decisions and live by them. Some were not so good decisions but as the saying goes, "If I could make my own bed, I jolly well better be able to lie in it".

Now that I am a mother, the decisions I make don't only matter to me but to this little girl, whom I owe my all to give her all the world has to offer.  What really annoys me about living here in Singapore, is that people can be so bleedy vocal about their opinions! And I am not only talking about people whom I know personally! I've had the displeasure of meeting such people either in the streets, or in another 'hot-spot', the trains!

I don't need some random stranger to tell me how, I as a parent, should raise my child! People look at me and know that I am a young mother. But that does not give you any right to assume that I am not a good parent!

I remember having some lady tell me that I should not breastfeed my child because god knows what I eat and that may not be good for my daughter. How formula milk is so much better. Hello, what century are you in? It is encouraged around the globe that breastfeeding is highly recommended!

OnSugar Blog: 5 Must Haves For a Clean, Stylish, Happy Baby and Mommy

Lots of moms and mommies-to-be like to think out loud, and Nicole Pearl, the Beauty Girl is one of them.

Lots of moms and mommies-to-be like to think out loud, and Nicole Pearl, the Beauty Girl is one of them. She recently posted about her favorite products for baby and mom on her The Beauty Girl blog.

It's only Tuesday and it's already been a big week of celeb news: Kim K's divorcing and Jessica Simpson's having a baby! Breakups suck, but personal experience proves they make you stronger. Babies, on the other hand, are the biggest gift of love. I can't believe my little man Rex is already 8 weeks old! I admit, the past couple of months have been grueling between the sleepless nights and never-ending bouts of spit up. But they've also been the most rewarding, magical moments of my life.

Jessica's announcement got me thinking about how far I've come as a mom. Like, I went from not knowing what a breast pump was to being able to put the parts together in the dark. And the full five minutes it once took me to change a diaper has been shaved down to seconds. In just two months, I've become fluent in baby from gadgets to products. I still have a lot to learn, and I've been grateful to all the moms who have shared their tips with me. Now, it's my turn to pay it forward. I've listed a few of my favorite finds (more installments to come!). Hopefully these will come in just as handy for baby Simpson and all the future tots-to-be.

Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash: After washing Rex's hair and body with this, he smells just like a baby should — fresh, clean and yummy all at once. I've been sent a lot of baby bath products from a bunch of different companies and will report back on the others as I give them a try.

Kicky Pants, Ralph Lauren and Splendid onesies: A onesie is the baby equivalent of a dress. Just slip it on and the look is complete. From preppy to hipster, I love dressing Rex up in stylish looks, and I've fallen in love with the fashions from these three brands. Kicky Pants onesies come in fun prints and are made with a bamboo fabric that's so soft, I wish they made clothes for adults. Rex may as well be a model for Ralph Lauren because every other thing he wears is RL baby. From the most precious white nightie to a velour jumper, there's a wealth of adorable options, especially for boys. Splendid wins for creating mini versions of fashions that you'd wear yourself. Like the brand's adult line, the clothes are comfy and cute. Check out Rex in the lower photo with his teddy. He's rocking a Splendid hooded onesie.

Baby Aquaphor: I oil Rex up from head to toe every night. I keep a tub by his changing table and a tube in my diaper bag. I swear by this ointment. It's kept his pretty baby face acne free, has fended off diaper rash and stopped the first signs of cradle cap in its tracks.

If November has you craving comfort foods, cook up a rich, nap-inducing bolognese sauce courtesy of OnSugar blogger Food Orleans.

Rainy, gray November days beg for something warm and fortifying, and this is certainly both.  You might not be ready to run a marathon afterward, but you'll be ready for a marathon sleep.  Cheers to that!

Sauce Bolognese is perfect on fettucine, penne, or ladled over gnocchi, with lots of fresh Parmigiano Reggiano (that's the real stuff) grated over the top.  One of its traditional uses is as the sauce component of lasagna, as in Lasagna Bolognese — but you could also turn it into a baked ziti, or a soup, or even a very cheeky chili. It's also highly adaptable, so feel free to add veggies or substitute other meats (or non-meats) as you wish.  In other words, you have permission to get artsy with your food. Just another perk of living in the best restaurant city in the universe: a great tip from a neighbor about using veal, which was spot-on

Reader Recipe: Carnitas

What's the best way to prepare pork?

What's the best way to prepare pork? If you ask Yoo Eatz, the answer is clear: as slow-cooked oregano and orange-inflected carnitas.

Ah, pork. Be it crispy golden tonkatsu, softly simmered chile verde, or even a perfectly pan-fried chop, I can't get enough of the other white meat. At the forefront of my porcine passion: carnitas: that tender, flavorful pork crisped at the edges by a hot bath in its own fat. Surprisingly, recipes are bountiful for such a simple dish. I've seen preparations involving braising, roasting, and deep-frying in a backyard turkey fryer, and an exponential number of seasonings, from a healthy dash of salt to a myriad of unconventional ingredients. In the end, it depends on personal preference, and I like my carnitas about as simple as can be with a little Mexican oregano and orange notes to highlight the sweetness of the meat. As for condiments, the more the merrier, but I tend to enjoy pork the most with "green" flavors (tomatillo salsa verde and guacamole), pickled red onions, and salty cotija cheese with homemade corn tortillas, fresh radishes, black beans, and rice on the side.

OnSugar Blog: Dr. Sears Creates More Yummies!

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and MiaFT is one of them.

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and MiaFT is one of them. This is an excerpt from one of the latest posts on her Baby Love blog.

If you're a mother, then obviously you have heard of Dr. Sears. But did you know that he now makes snacks and supplements for kids? We were lucky enough to be able to try the Popumz. They are 100 percent natural whole grain crisps, and they have all of the important stuff like fiber, protein, and Omega 3. At first I was skeptical, because they look like those rice cakes for dieting. I wondered how they could be healthy and tasty? So of course I had to have a taste, and they really were yummy!  Audrey inhaled the chocolate and vanilla flavors!

They also have BBQ, cheddar, and ranch, which are a great alternative to giving Audrey potato chips. She loves them just as much, and that's because they taste exactly like chips! They are really good, I could have eaten the whole bag myself!

Even though they are healthy, they are really delicious! Dr. Sears also makes snack bars, drink boxes, and even vitamins!
