TV Dinners: Grey's Anatomy - Izzie's Cupcakes

I think I might have been the last lady on the planet to start watching Grey's Anatomy.

I think I might have been the last lady on the planet to start watching Grey's Anatomy. I have recently joined the McDreamy bandwagon and am working on catching up. I'm only part way through season one and just watched the episode called "Save Me." In this episode Izzie spends a ridiculous amount of time worrying that she can't duplicate her mom's cupcake recipe. Eventually she employs the help of a psychic and the recipe crisis is resolved.

Can I just say that after watching this episode, I had to have, no make that needed to have, those cupcakes. Lucky for me (and you), there's no need to employ a psychic. After a bit of digging, I actually found the recipe. To learn how to make Izzie's Cupcakes, read more

Happy Hour: Café Netherland

Sometimes, especially during this time of year, I want a drink that warms me from the inside out.

Sometimes, especially during this time of year, I want a drink that warms me from the inside out. When I found this drink from Cincinnati bartender Morgan Jump, I knew it would be the perfect drink to serve on a cold winter day. If you're lucky enough to be at home today, put a pot of coffee on, call up some friends and have them over for a Café Netherland.

Café Netherland
From Morgan Jump

1/2 oz Kahlúa
1/2 oz Frangelico
1/2 oz Baileys Irish Cream
1/2 oz coffee

Serve in a glass mug and top with whipped cream.

If you don't have Frangelico, use hazelnut syrup instead.

Creator Morgan Jump says: "This is one of our most popular signature drinks and is great when it's cold outside. You got to have the whipped cream. Throw in a cherry for the holidays."

Tips

Keep 'em Separated

You know that recipe you've been avoiding because it calls for three egg yolks and you just can't seem to get the hang of egg separation?

You know that recipe you've been avoiding because it calls for three egg yolks and you just can't seem to get the hang of egg separation? Well dig it back out because this extendable egg separator is going to be your saving grace. Simply place it over any bowl (it can fit bowls 5 to 9 inches) and crack your egg over it. The whites will pass through while the yolk remains in the center. Then move the yolk to another container and start all over again. You'll have three perfect egg yolks in no time.

Note: It's best to start with cold eggs. However if your eggs need to be room temperature for your recipe, cover yolks with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming.

Add Some Flavor to Bland Office Coffee

Office coffee is usually more of a necessity than a luxury.

Office coffee is usually more of a necessity than a luxury. It's often bitter, burnt or bland and you suffer through each cup in order to make it through the day. Well the folks at Bada Beans feel your pain and have come up with a small new coffee confection to help you out. These cutely titled "beans" currently come in three different flavors (Vanilla Bean, Caramel Fudge and Hazelnut) and are meant to jazz up that bland cup of coffee. Created as an alternative to flavored syrups (which are not easily portable or storable), Bada Beans are tiny mint-sized beans that you put into coffee to enhance the flavor.

Since I don't usually enjoy my coffee black, I decided to see if these beans lived up to their potential and gave them all a try. To check out my full review, read more

Tips

Definition: Stock vs. Broth

Stock: A strained liquid that results from simmering meats, fish, herbs, and vegetables in water.

Stock: A strained liquid that results from simmering meats, fish, herbs, and vegetables in water. It is usually made by browning bones, vegetables and other ingredients before they're cooked in the liquid for hours. Used as a basis for soups or sauces.

Broth: A flavorful, aromatic liquid made by simmering water or stock with meat or vegetables.

Generally speaking, stock has a heartier, richer flavor. This is mostly due to the bones used (broth is made with meat only and no bones). In most recipes the two can be interchanged with similar results. Fine chefs might tell you different, but for regular home cooking, the dish will be fine. However, note that broth may end up saltier than stock, so you may need to adjust your recipe accordingly.

Today's Special: Spaghetti with Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Sauce

Today's Special is a delightful pasta dish that is both creamy and light at the same time.

Today's Special is a delightful pasta dish that is both creamy and light at the same time. If you are making a run to the store be sure to pick up fresh bacon (you can also substitute pancetta) and a jar of sun-dried tomatoes in oil. Chopping is minimal: only garlic and onion making this simple and quick. If you don't have a lot of time to quarter the onion and smash and peel the garlic, then throw into your food processor. Hit the chop button and, voila, the machine does the work for you! This spaghetti is so delish you could even whip it up for friends for an impromptu holiday dinner.
