Eggs + Sugar + Cream = Endless Possibilities

It may be incredibly geeky, but I think the science of cooking is extremely interesting.

It may be incredibly geeky, but I think the science of cooking is extremely interesting. For example, you can create a variety of dessert dishes depending on what you do with eggs, sugar, and cream. Ice creams, custards, and puddings all are a combination of eggs, sugar, and cream.

Today I feel like experimenting with an egg, sugar and cream treatment that will result in my favorite Spanish dessert, flan. To make the experiment even more exciting, I'll be making coconut flan. For the recipe, read more

Happy Hour: Baby, It's Cold Outside

The weather around the country has been wild.

The weather around the country has been wild. In my neck of the woods, it's been dipping below freezing at night. In fact, the tiny little pond in my backyard (yes, I have a backyard in San Francisco and yes, I know that's practically unheard of) has frozen over! To commemorate this wacky spell of cold weather, I found the perfectly titled drink.

Baby, It's Cold Outside
From Shoana Jenson at Cityline

1 part Vodka
2 parts Xante
Pear nectar/juice

Build over ice in a cocktail glass.
Garnish with a slice of starfruit.

Go From an A to a Boza

Hey Ladies! Wanna go from an A cup to a B cup?

Hey Ladies!
Wanna go from an A cup to a B cup? Well book yourself on a plane to Bulgaria. Bulgarian Boza, which is made from fermented wheat flour and yeast, claims to "enhance breasts." Seriously, that's what it's famed for.

And now that Bulgaria is part of the EU, and the customs taxes have been lifted, droves of European men are heading there to buy cases for their ladies.

Constantin Barbu crossed the Danube from Romania to buy Boza in the Bulgarian border town of Ruse.

He said: "I've bought a case for my wife to try out. I really hope I see an improvement."

Funny how it's the men going the extra mile to get the product and not the ladies. Somehow that just doesn't seem to surprise me.

Off to Market

Off to Market: Cocktail Party Menu

In a few weeks, I am catering a cocktail party for my friend's Elena and Sean.

In a few weeks, I am catering a cocktail party for my friend's Elena and Sean. They are a very intelligent couple, she's an engineer, and he's a chemist, and are so busy looking for ways to make the world a better place, that they don't have time to plan their party. Of course, they turned to me their dear friend, and life of the party, to take control of their event. Now I create a party plan every week and thought it would be fun to let you come up with the menu for this party, readers! It's a cocktail party for 15 people with both meat-lovers and vegetarians so be sure to include meaty and meatless recipes. The menu should consist of 4-5 hors d'oeuvres recipes, some cold and some hot, two sweet treat options, and a specialty cocktail. Add your awesome appetizer and cool cocktail recipes to the recipe database on TeamSugar with the tag Cocktail Party Menu. What are you waiting for? It's off to market!

Today's Special: Grilled Chicken and Eggplant Stacks

Indoor grilling pans that allow you to grill inside on the stove top are all the rage.

Indoor grilling pans that allow you to grill inside on the stove top are all the rage. Watch any cooking show and all the cheffies have one in their home kitchen or on their sets. I recently got one for my kitchen, and I don't know what I did without it. These days if you are lucky enough to be moving into a new house, with new appliances, your stove top will most likely have a grill pan. However, if you don't have one, you can easily find such pans anywhere from Target to Williams Sonoma. Tonight's special is a meal that can be ready in under a half an hour and requires the use of some sort of grill. If you don't have one and feel no need to purchase one, make the grilled chicken on the original grill, the barbecue. For the recipe, read more

Come Party With Me: Winter Dinner - Invites

Dinner parties are my favorite type of party to host.

Dinner parties are my favorite type of party to host. Intimate, relaxing and fun, a dinner allows you to really visit each of your guests and highlight your culinary skills.
I just got back from a trip to Spain and have not had a chance to see all of my friends yet. That's why I've decided to invite 7 of my closest friends over this Saturday for a winter themed dinner party. As always, I'm making and sending my own invitations. To see what I've got in mind, read more

A Little Soul Food

As we all know, today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

As we all know, today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. What you may not know is that Dr. King was a true fan of good old fashioned authentic southern food. Born in Alabama in 1929, Dr. King was raised eating the African-American food of the south, commonly called Soul Food and his favorite food was fried pig's ears sandwiches. Usually I would encourage you to make this dish in honor of him and his accomplishments, but I doubt any of us will be frying up pig's ears today. Instead, I suggest we make another of his soul food fave, smothered pork chops. For the recipe, read more
