Thanksgiving

You Gotta Eat Food to Donate Food

You may have eaten a lot of food on Thanksgiving, but did you eat enough to feed ten people?

You may have eaten a lot of food on Thanksgiving, but did you eat enough to feed ten people? Tim "Eater X" Janus did. In a strange publicity stunt aimed to draw attention to New York City's hungry, competitive eaters from around the globe gathered to see who could eat the most during a Thanksgiving battle. Janus pushed out his competitors — including hot dog champ Joey Chestnut — by chowing down on a 10-lb. turkey, 4 lbs. of mashed potatoes, 3 lbs. of cranberry sauce, and 2.5 lbs. of beans. The event raised $6,000 — enough for 30,000 meals — for the Food Bank of New York City. The week prior, the league donated $4,000 to Second Harvest food bank.

On one hand it's fantastic to see that they're donating the funds, on the other it's a sad that a waste of food is needed in order to donate food. What do you think?

Reader Recipe: Pumpkin Wontons

Tired of pumpkin pie and feeling quite adventurous, our very own TeamSugar decided to create bite-size pumpkin treats.

Tired of pumpkin pie and feeling quite adventurous, our very own TeamSugar decided to create bite-size pumpkin treats. She experimented with phyllo dough, pie crust, and wontons. The wontons won out, and she ended up serving them for Thanksgiving. However, baked pumpkin pillows made with super-thin pie crust was a wonderful second place. Did You Watch the Iron Chef Holiday Special?

Last night, as I was flipping through the channels, I landed on a bizzaro-world version of Iron Chef America.

Last night, as I was flipping through the channels, I landed on a bizzaro-world version of Iron Chef America. It was an all-star holiday battle pitting Cat Cora and Paula Deen against Tyler Florence and Robert Irvine. Everyone was in great spirits and the holiday vibe was really ringing true. Paula created a cheese fudge dipped in caramel and white chocolate, Tyler goofed his Bouche de Noel, sous chefs dressed as elves yelled "bite me," Robert had his finger bit by Paula, Cat proved she was an Iron Chef by keeping her cool, and Alton subtly mocked the entire thing. Did I mention that Tina Fey was one of the judges?

Did you guys watch it? If so what did you think? I thought it was a really hysterical episode, and if you missed out make sure you set your Tivo — it's on again tomorrow night.

Off To Market: Knife Set

I've decided to treat myself to a new set of knives this holiday season.

I've decided to treat myself to a new set of knives this holiday season. My collection of knives is minimal; it's a makeshift grouping of lost and leftover knives. I don't have a sharpener so they rest jaggedly, unsharpened in the knife block. Can you help me by searching for a superb, sharply stylish knife set? Look for reasonably priced knives with a variety of knife types. Or, look for individual knives that I can use to create my own set. Bookmark your finds in the Yum Market on TeamSugar with the keyword tag Knife Set. Good luck!

YumSugar Gift Guide: Books for Cooks

My sister is a big reader — she always seems to have her nose shoved into a book — that is starting to develop a larger interest in cooking.

My sister is a big reader — she always seems to have her nose shoved into a book — that is starting to develop a larger interest in cooking. That's why this year I'm thinking about getting her one of the many wonderful cookbooks and memoirs that have recently hit the shelves. If you've got a reader in your family — or someone who just loves cookbooks — take note, there are some great gifts to be found. One of my top choices is Cooking by James Peterson; it is an impressive tome with over 1500 color photos and is a fantastic reference for any cook. However, if your bookworm is more book and less cook, you may want to try The Amateur Gourmet, a charming book that's difficult to put down. Scroll through for more gift ideas, including one for a Deluxe Cookbook Holder.

Do You Want Chocolate Covered Cherries in Your Dr. Pepper?

I'm a fan of Dr. Pepper, and I'm a fan of chocolate covered cherries, however, I'd never thought of mashing the two flavors together.

I'm a fan of Dr. Pepper, and I'm a fan of chocolate covered cherries, however, I'd never thought of mashing the two flavors together. Fortunately — or unfortunately depending on how you see it — someone at Dr. Pepper did. This year the latest limited edition flavored soda on the shelves is Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper. It's only available for a limited time, but if history repeats itself, it may hit shelves more permanently. In 2004, Dr. Pepper announced a limited edition Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper that is now available year round; it was followed by Berries & Cream Dr. Pepper. The new Cherry Chocolate flavor is only the third flavor extension in Dr. Pepper's history.

Has anyone out there seen it on their store shelves? If so, have you tried it?
