Yum Market Finds: Go Green!

This week, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, I thought it would be fun to show you some of the awesome green stuff you have found online and saved in the Yum Market. I don't want to be misleading, when I say green I mean the color, not the environmental movement that has taken over the world (although it would be cool if there was some eco green stuff in the Yum Market, hint hint). To add a splash of green to your kitchen, here are my top picks:

How cool is this green bowl that Eruntale found? It's ideal for eating in bed or taking your cereal to go. I love how its shape is somewhere in between a bowl and a large tea cup.

St. Patrick's Day Peppermint Pie

Just in case you didn't get enough dessert ideas for tomorrow's St. Patrick's Day celebration, I thought I would give you one more.

Just in case you didn't get enough dessert ideas for tomorrow's St. Patrick's Day celebration, I thought I would give you one more. I've already given you two recipes that feature Bailey's Irish cream (a cheesecake and a chocolate cake) and one that is flavored with Irish whiskey (a creamy dream) and now I am going to tempt and tease you with a St. Patrick's Day peppermint pie that obtains its minty flavor from crème de menthe. I know some of you aren't throwing a party or going all out this year, so I suggest that you enjoy the holiday in the comfort of your own kitchen. Pop a bottle of bubbly, tie on your apron and make yourself a special dessert. While you wait for it to chill, you can sip your champagne and congratulate yourself for opting to stay in instead of going out with the masses of drunk people. For the recipe, read more

Ten "Must-Drink" Irish Whiskeys

Times are changing and Irish whiskey is demanding that you pay attention to it.

Times are changing and Irish whiskey is demanding that you pay attention to it. It's been "well known" that serious whiskey drinkers drink scotch for drinking and use blended Irish whiskey for drowning their sorrows. However Irish whiskey companies, such as Jameson and Bushmills, are expanding their ranges to include deluxe creations ranging from pot stills, aged blends and their own brand of single malts.

"The top Irish whiskeys are just as good as many single-malt scotches. It's too bad more people aren't aware of how complex some of these whiskeys have become."

John Hansell [editor and publisher of Malt Advocate magazine] says Irish distillers are simply--and astutely--responding to consumer demand.

"People are drinking less, but smarter," he says. "They don't just want whiskey, they want the best whiskey. And they'll pay for it."

And so, just in time for St. Patrick's day, Forbes has compiled a list of the ten "must-drink" Irish whiskeys. To discover what's on the list, read more

Happy Hour: The Lucky Pears Faux-jito

A little while back we gave you a sampling of pear vodka and if you haven't tasted it yet, what are you waiting for?

A little while back we gave you a sampling of pear vodka and if you haven't tasted it yet, what are you waiting for? Pear vodka is everywhere, it's the vodka to mix in your specialty drinks. Being that St. Patty's is tomorrow I have the perfect green, mint infused cocktail recipe. This is an exclusive concoction being served tomorrow at the St. Patrick's Day celebration at Nurse Bettie in New York City. The drink is an interesting interpretation of a mojito with a blend of the vodka, midori sour, and white grape juice. Sound like a refreshing alternative to drinking beer? Lemongrass

A fragrant herb that is used in soups, seafood and meat dishes to produce a lemony flavor, especially in Thai cooking. Fresh lemongrass is pale green in color and has a subtle lemon scent. Its flavor comes from citral, which is an essential oil that is also found in lemon peel. When used in stock, it is cut into strips and bruised to release the flavorful oils. Otherwise the tough outer layers are discarded and the top portion is trimmed off. Also called citronella.

Secret Ingredient: Cumin Recap + Chicken is Next!

The next secret ingredient is chicken.

The next secret ingredient is chicken.
I've been pretty specific with the ingredients lately, so this week I thought I'd take a broader step. Put all of your best chicken recipes (I'm talking soups, pot pies, bbq, anything!) up on TeamSugar and tag them with the following phrase: "Secret Ingredient Chicken" - make sure it's all one phrase, no commas, etc. (or, alternatively, you can also find old recipes you've already posted and add that phrase to the keyword section). I can't wait to see what you guys come up with! Thanks for playing along, we'll recap your entries next week!

Compliment with white rice! This week, the secret ingredient was cumin. There were some delicious looking recipes including Cumin Coriander Chicken, Homemade Burgers and Salsa (yum!), but my favorite was definitely these Frijoles Negros from user DesignRchic. It's a lovely Cuban dish that doesn't require the beans to be soaked for hours. To check out her recipe, read more

Get your TiVos warmed up, there's some new stuff coming to Food Network.

Get your TiVos warmed up, there's some new stuff coming to Food Network. They just recently announced their 2007 programming additions and here's what we can expect this summer:

  • Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives - starring - looks like Food Network is putting their new star Guy Fieri (who, I might add was absent from any of the Food Network's South Beach Festival photos I saw) behind the wheel of his 1967 Camaro looking for the best diners, drive-ins and dives the US has to offer. Debuts April 23.
  • Simply Delicioso (working title) - Galavision superstar Ingrid Hoffmann brings her Latin lifestyle expertise to America. Debuts in July.
  • Food Dudes (working title) - Follow two young chefs, Vinny Dotolo and Jon Shook, try to make a name for themselves and their catering business. Debuts this fall.

Today's Special: Pork Chops with Tomato and Arugula

My friend Jon's favorite food is pork chops.

My friend Jon's favorite food is pork chops. He loves them so much that in college we lovingly nicknamed him Pork Chop. He is coming to dinner and I thought I would prepare a healthier version of his beloved pork chops. Although it's Friday, I won't have a whole bunch of time to prep a dinner so I am using this simple recipe - the chops and salad can be ready in practically 15 minutes! To make this meal for the pork chop lover in your life, read more

What Do You Call a Soda?

This map shows the popular generic names for soft drinks by county. I'm really surprised, I thought more states used the word "soda" instead of "pop" and I actually didn't realize that so many people used the word "coke" to mean all soda.

Come Party With Me

Come Party With Me: St. Patrick's Day - Music

I've been a wild rover for many of year, and I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer.

I've been a wild rover for many of year, and I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer. And now I'm returning with wealth in great store and I never will play the wild rover no more. And it's no nay, never... Yes, I know the lyrics to an Irish drinking song. Ok I confess I know the lyrics to more than one Irish drinking song: when I was little Al, my grandfather, taught me and my sister a whole bunch and we would sing them to our relatives. Tomorrow I'll sing them (with the help of a few beers) to my friends while I celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I've invited them to join me for an Irish inspired dinner followed by a pub crawl. I'm decorating my house with lots of shamrocks and serving green beer. Practically everything is all prepped and it's looking like one fabulous party. I just have to figure out what music will be playing softly in the background while we eat. To see the soundtrack to my dinner, read more
