Happy Hour: The Goonie

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Goonies.

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Goonies. So when I saw that there was a drink called "The Goonie," I knew it was something I would have to try. I'm not really sure why it's called that (if anyone has any idea, let me know), but it sounds great. It's an equal mix of vodka, raspberry liquer, cranberry juice and orange juice that should be nice and fruity for the summer. If nothing else, just telling people that you've made them a Goonie should be good enough. After all, Cyndi Lauper said, Goonies 'R' Good Enough"... To check out the recipe, read more

Tips

Simple Tip: Make Your Egg Slicer a Multi-Tasker, Part 2

A couple of weeks ago YumSugar pointed out that you can use an egg slicer to cut more than just a perfectly hard boiled egg.

A couple of weeks ago YumSugar pointed out that you can use an egg slicer to cut more than just a perfectly hard boiled egg. She recommended using it for slicing strawberries or mushrooms, but forgot to mention my favorite use for this wonderful multi-tasking tool: cutting fresh mozzarella for caprese salads. Fresh mozzarella is quite soft, making it difficult to slice with a knife, but with an egg slicer all you have to do is separate the cheese into pieces.

Flowers

Pronounced del-FINNY-um, this flower derives its name from the dolphin shaped buds and is more commonly know as larkspur. Originally from China, there are now over 250 different species found throughout the Northern Hemisphere and the mountains of Africa. The flowers have five petals which grow together to form a hollow flower with a spur at the end. Delphinium blooms in shades of blue, purple, white, salmon, and yellow with the primary blooming season from April to October. Delphinium is a poisonous plant, so handle with care and do not consume. They make great dried flowers, grow in full sun or afternoon shade, and can get up to a eight feet tall. When growing them, carefully stake each flower spike to protect it from breaking in the wind. To prevent mildew, avoid wetting leaves when watering. They combine well with poppies and foxgloves and have attractive uses in vases and as flowerbed borders.

Wine

Definition: White Zinfandel

White Zinfandel A type of rosé or blush wine made from red Zinfandel grapes.

White Zinfandel
A type of rosé or blush wine made from red Zinfandel grapes. It takes its rosy pink color from the grape skins that are quickly removed from the juice after the grapes are pressed. By removing the skins, the transfer of dark pigments is prohibited. The wine is then made using the same process as white wine. The flavor is slightly sweet and pairs nicely with cream based pastas, fish, and other light dishes.

Water

Flavored Filtered Water

I've got good news for those of you who think water is too plain.

I've got good news for those of you who think water is too plain. Pur water filter systems have come up with a new way to add flavor to your water. With the new Pur Flavor Options, you can now add a splash of strawberry, peach or raspberry to each glass. The flavor cartridge fits into the Pur filters like a regular cartridge and if you're not sure which flavor to try, there's a helpful quiz to determine what your flavor is.

Each flavor cartridge is good for 75 servings of flavor with no added sugar, calories or dyes. Sounds pretty interesting, but I have to ask, what is wrong with plain water?

Love It or Hate It

Zipper Wine Bag: Love It Or Hate It?

These zipper wine bags, designed by Beth Fuller, are an interesting way to sell and package wine.

These zipper wine bags, designed by Beth Fuller, are an interesting way to sell and package wine. Each bag is made from organic cotton and is dyed with wine - so if you spill you'll actually be contributing to the pattern. The handle is a continuation of the zipper that holds the wine in place. I love the way they look and I can see it being used as a fun bag, even without the wine bottle. What do you guys think? Do you love them or hate them?

Light, Green Veggie Pasta: Perfect For Tonight's Dinner

On busy weeknights, pasta is an excellent go to dish, especially if you are feeding hungry husbands or cranky kids.

On busy weeknights, pasta is an excellent go to dish, especially if you are feeding hungry husbands or cranky kids. Before I found this recipe, the thought of putting avocado into a pasta dish had never crossed my mind. Avocado is one of my favorite vegetables and I love it so much, why not toss it with pasta? Add in spring's most beloved vegetable, asparagus, and a little grated cheese and you'll have dinner on the table in the amount of time it takes to boil the water and cook the pasta. I can't wait to try this tonight and you can too. For the simple recipe, read more
