An Exhausting Way to Cook a Burger

Would you like a nice charbroiled burger?

Would you like a nice charbroiled burger? Oh wait, did I say charbroiled, I meant Car-broiled. That's right, I said car.

A group of inventors have created the Exhaust Burger that allows you to drive and cook burgers at the same time. The exhaust goes through the top of the contraption — don't worry, the exhaust doesn't actually touch the burger — and heats the metal. The metal then cooks the burger, sort of like a George Foreman grill, only there's nowhere for the grease to go. The product is still in the concept phase, but I can see where it could be helpful — no extra fuel or energy needed — however, there's something about it that just seems wrong. Wouldn't it just be a greasy mess? Yet, having said that, you all know I'd be the first in line to see what it tastes like!

Oh and does this remind anyone else of Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt contraption that allows him to cook stew while riding his motorcycle?

Happy Hour: Pink Port

British retail giant Marks & Spencer has just launched a pink port intended to appeal to women.

British retail giant Marks & Spencer has just launched a pink port intended to appeal to women. The wine, which is unimaginatively called Pink Port, is lighter in hue than regular port because it takes a small amount of color from the grape skins. They've decided to test this product out because many folks associate port as a man's drink — much like they wrongly assume whiskey and bourbon are for men only.

I'll admit, I'm drawn to things by their packaging, so I'm sure this would have grabbed my interest. However, unfortunately, according to Guy Woodward, editor of Decanter magazine, the wine's not worth it. He believes it was more like vodka cranberry than port and said:

I suspect they're trying to jump on the rosé bandwagon, but it tastes worryingly close to the alcopop market.

It's a bummer to hear that port marketed towards women is inferior to regular port. Do they think we won't notice if it's bad? What do you guys think? Do you think we even need our own port?

What Are You Waiting For? Open That Wine!

Are you holding on to a certain bottle of wine?

Are you holding on to a certain bottle of wine? Perhaps it's a bottle that has a place in your heart, or maybe it's one you are saving for a special occasion. Well, it's time to quit waiting and start drinking. Open That Bottle Night — a celebration in which wine lovers all over the world uncork a cherished bottle and enjoy the contents — is Saturday, Feb. 23. Created in 2000 by two wine writers from the Wall Street Journal —Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher — Open That Bottle Night gives wine drinkers a reason to finally drink that coveted bottle. The writers argue:

These dear bottles have a special way of retrieving warm and often-forgotten memories, but you have to pop the cork to release them. That's why we invented Open That Bottle Night. So very many of us have that special bottle — from a departed loved one, from a visit to a winery, from a vacation — that we're always going to open for just the right moment, but, of course, that moment never comes.

Until now! Mark your calendars and get your corkscrews ready. I will be popping a bottle of Moet Chandon that I've been saving since 2005. How about you? Will you open one of your most precious bottles?

After a morning of errands last weekend, I rewarded myself with an enormous Herb Roasted Sonoma Turkey sandwich from Pluto's, a local chain known for its sammies, salads, and comfort foods like mashed potatoes and stuffing. The aroma there always reminds me of Thanksgiving, so a sandwich made from freshly carved turkey and cranberry sauce was a must.

For today's 'Wich of the Week, I'll tell you how to create this traditional holiday leftover sandwich any time of year. After all, turkey and cranberry is such a delicious combination, it would be a shame to eat it only on Thanksgiving. To find out how to make it, read more
