Have Your Mint Popsicles and Eat the Stick Too!

Recently we brainstormed the ultimate Popsicle.

Recently we brainstormed the ultimate Popsicle. In my ideal Popsicle, the pesky wooden stick would be replaced with something deliciously edible. I decided to experiment with Pepperidge Farm Pirouettes, a rolled, wafer cookie with cream filling, using the cookie as the stick. The result is an easy and entirely edible Popsicle, inspired by one of my favorite Girl Scout Cookies — Thin Mints! Making the Popsicles was simple: I filled small Dixie cups with ice cream and gently inserted the cookie stick. The chocolate coating proved more difficult. I intended to quickly dip the Popsicles in melted chocolate and crushed mint cookies.

Unfortunately, the chocolate froze faster than I could dip and roll, so I opted for a simple chocolate coating. The wafer sticks come in four flavors, so feel free to choose your favorite cookie/ice cream combination. To learn the technique, read more

Burning Question: Are Haricots Verts Just Green Beans?

Yes and no. While an "haricot vert" literally translates to "green bean," these French green beans (left) are typically longer and thinner than their American counterparts (right).

Yes and no. While an "haricot vert" literally translates to "green bean," these French green beans (left) are typically longer and thinner than their American counterparts (right). Haricots verts are more tender than the average green bean, and are often used in salads and pickling recipes, where they are prized for their crispness. While both green beans belong to the same family, Fabaceae, they are different varietals. However, the two varieties can, for most practical purposes, be used interchangeably.

Happy Hour: Rossellini

Sunny weekends in San Francisco are hard to come by.

Sunny weekends in San Francisco are hard to come by. When I awoke last Saturday to clear-blue skies, I headed over to Bar Bambino, an Italian nook in the city with a new back patio.

There, I enjoyed the perfect warm-weather drink: a spin on sangria that was refreshing and fruity without being overly cloying or too heavy on the alcohol. With one in hand, I imagined I was an effortlessly chic Italian woman. I snagged the recipe for the next real Summer day.

The cocktail calls for white wine (I'd recommend a Sauvignon Blanc, or any other dry white with mineral notes) as well as orange bitters, which can be found at large liquor stores. For the recipe, read more

Yikes! Nestlé Prepared Foods, the manufacturer of Hot Pockets, is recalling more than 215,000 pounds of Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizza after several pieces of red, hard plastic and clear rubber material were discovered inside some of the pockets. The recall is for 54-ounce, 12-pack cartons of Hot Pockets Pepperoni Pizza with the following codes printed on the sides of each carton: 8157544614D, EST 7721A, and BEST BEFORE JAN2010.

This is the second recall this Summer for Hot Pockets. Just last month, 350,000 packages of two-pack Spinach Artichoke Chicken Lean Pockets were recalled for the same reason. Perhaps it's time to lay off the pockets for a while.

Come Party With Me: My Birthday — Invite

Hard to believe a whole six months has passed since my half birthday party, but it has!

Hard to believe a whole six months has passed since my half birthday party, but it has! This week I'm planning what I consider to be the most important party of the year: my birthday party. Last Thursday I secured the location — 15 Romolo, an under the radar and up-and-coming hot spot on the San Francisco bar scene — and this week I have to make and send the invitations. Since 27 isn't a milestone birthday, I'm keeping things chic and simple. There is no theme, but pink and flowers will play a big role in the look and feel of the invite. To see how I made these pretty invitations, read more

Calcium = The Sixth Taste?

Scientists in Philadelphia have discovered that mice can taste calcium.

Scientists in Philadelphia have discovered that mice can taste calcium. Since humans and rodents share many of the same genes, the human tongue should taste calcium as well. For centuries the four basic tastes were sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. However when umami, the fifth "savory" taste, was recognized 100 years ago, the door opened to research other tastes. According to Michael Tordoff, a geneticist who participated in the mice study, a human's palate can detect the mineral. It tastes:

Calcium tastes calcium-y, there isn't a better word for it. It is bitter, perhaps even a little sour. But it's much more because there are actual receptors for calcium, not just bitter or sour compounds.

Tordoff claims that the bitterness of certain vegetables, like bok choy or dark greens, is due to high levels of calcium. Although milk is full of calcium, the fats prevent us from tasting it.

Since I've always thought it was crazy that only four basic tastes exist, the discovery is incredibly interesting, and I think that maybe I've tasted calcium. What do you make of the findings? Have you ever tasted calcium?
