Pumpkin: A Savory Flavor That Spans Seasons

We've got a new partnership with Padma Lakshmi!

We've got a new partnership with Padma Lakshmi! The host of the Emmy-winning Top Chef, writer, and designer started Padma Lakshmi, a social-networking site that celebrates our favorite topics including food adventures, recipes, and party planning. She'll be dishing up goodies for us here on YumSugar monthly. Today Padma offers creative ideas for cooking with pumpkin during the Winter months.

Pumpkins, or winter squash as many people call it, has many more uses beyond a traditional jack-o'-lantern or filling for pumpkin pie. Aside from a delicious, mellow flavor, pumpkin provides really significant levels of potassium, vitamin A, and beta-carotene making it a healthful, wintry addition to hearty meals and more.

A delicate slice of pumpkin pie or pumpkin cheesecake flavored with allspice, nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon tastes like a nostalgic slice of home for many people this time of year. While a pumpkin puree most definitely lends itself to dessert very well, it’s also great as an appetizer and main course.

It’s very common to see pumpkin ravioli in Italian cooking or a pumpkin tempura or sushi with kabocha, which is the Japanese variety. In parts of India, you see pumpkin in vegetarian stews or chowders called sambar that is made with pigeon peas and tamarind. Keep reading for Padma's favorite pumpkin preparations.

Try a New Pizza Pie With Butternut Squash and Brie

If you're like me and love to make pizza at home, with tomatoes and bell peppers out of season right now, one sometimes has to get a little more clever when it comes to Winter pizzas.

If you're like me and love to make pizza at home, with tomatoes and bell peppers out of season right now, one sometimes has to get a little more clever when it comes to Winter pizzas. If you have already tried all of those, experiment with butternut squash as an unexpected pizza topping.

Of course, you will have to preroast the squash; I find it easiest to just roast it the night before but you could also pick up a bag of frozen butternut squash and precook it in a saute pan.

Once the squash is roasted, assembling the pizza is cinch. Drizzle the finished pizza with a touch of walnut oil, which adds even more flavor and richness. Serve it with arugula salad for an easy dinner, or slice it into smaller pizzas for an simple vegetarian appetizer. Skip delivery and make your own pizza pie by reading more for the recipe.

We are loving My Fare Foodie's delicious cure for insomnia. The description makes us sleepy just reading about it!

As an attempt to cure my chronic insomnia, I came up with a nightcap featuring all types of natural sleep aids. Warm milk, chamomile tea, honey, cinnamon, and tart cherry juice help the body miraculously produce melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep. This drink not only helps me sleep soundly, but it also happens to taste delicious! So long, sleepless nights.
