Soup's On: Creamy Butternut Squash Soup

When it comes to weeknight dinners, I'm an unabashed soup fan.

When it comes to weeknight dinners, I'm an unabashed soup fan. Sure, it might take slightly longer to simmer up than a pot of pasta, but by and large it's a hands-off affair, and few foods soothe the soul better after a hectic day.

Smooth, creamy (without being heavy), and subtly sweet, this iteration will be entering my rotation throughout the Fall and Winter months, and I encourage you to do the same.

10 Ways to Celebrate Día de los Muertos

Halloween may be over, but a ghoulish celebration continues on in Mexico.

Halloween may be over, but a ghoulish celebration continues on in Mexico. Every year on Nov. 1 and 2, the country celebrates Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a holiday that honors family and loved ones who have passed. Instead of focusing on the past, those who celebrate Day of the Dead lavishly decorate and hang by their departed's grave sites, while enjoying their favorite foods and drinks. If you want to incorporate a little Día de los Muertos flair into your supper tonight, or simply jump on any good excuse to enjoy some Mexican flavors, take a tip from these 10 recipes.

Rainy Day Beef Goulash With Gnocchi

Nostalgia is a funny thing; foods that we'd typically turn up our nose at can seem weirdly appealing, thanks to happy memories.

Nostalgia is a funny thing; foods that we'd typically turn up our nose at can seem weirdly appealing, thanks to happy memories. Rather than dine on a subpar meal in the name of authenticity, Food Orleans did it one better and revamped a childhood lunch-line favorite: hearty beef goulash.

Goulash is a dish that Paul and I have radically different memories of. I grew up eating the 1970's school-lunch version known as "Goulash Supreme," which consisted of soggy macaroni, bland ground beef, and stewed tomatoes. I should point out here that when I was a kid, I actually liked it. And that it's pretty much the only thing called "goulash" I remember eating, ever, anywhere. And that I'm ready for a better goulash to take its place in my life.

3 Ways to Make the Most of Your Halloween Candy

While fun-sized Halloween candies really hit the spot, there's only so much one stomach can handle.

While fun-sized Halloween candies really hit the spot, there's only so much one stomach can handle. You can always store those Halloween goodies and save them for a rainy day, or you could try a different approach.

There's no better way to make use of leftover Halloween goodies than cooking up a delicious dessert everyone in your house can enjoy. If you have a trick-or-treater living under your roof, it's even sweeter if you get them involved. Here are three recipes that will help make the most of your leftover Halloween candy.

  1. Use peanut butter cups to make these delicious Halloween blondies.
  2. Shortbread bars can be topped off with any leftover chocolate candy you have on hand.
  3. Curious about channeling your inner chocolatier? Basic chocolate bark is a great place to start. This recipe utilizes leftover candy corn, but the sky is the limit here. Don't be afraid to get creative with your candy choices!

Bake — Don't Brew — These Chai Tea Snickerdoodles

Tea-infused desserts are all the rage, and after YumSugar assistant editor Nicole made chai caramels, I felt inspired to make chai snickerdoodle cookies.

Tea-infused desserts are all the rage, and after YumSugar assistant editor Nicole made chai caramels, I felt inspired to make chai snickerdoodle cookies. Traditionally, snickerdoodles are a buttery sugar cookie, coated in cinnamon sugar. It's a childhood favorite, but I wondered how the cookie would hold up with more robust spices like ginger, cardamom, black pepper, and cloves.

As it turns out, chai in snickerdoodles is an enticing match. These cookies maintain snickerdoodle integrity with their fluffy, moist centers, and crunchy sugar-granule coating. The spices and tea are slightly tart and balance out the sweet, buttery cookie. The black-tea flavor blooms as the cookie dissolves, but get ready for the spicy black-pepper finish!

Forget about brewing tea; make a batch of tea cookies instead.
