Our Most Mouth-Watering Instagram Pictures of the Year
Like many people, you can find us filtering our way through bites and eats on Instagram. Throughout the year, we've enjoyed posting what we cooked, tasted, and drank with all of our followers and seeing what you had to share, too. It's in that spirit that we've gathered some of our most popular pictures leading up to the holidays. For more mouth-watering inspiration all year-round, make sure to follow YumSugar on Instagram (@heyyumsugar)!
The Basics: Roasted Butternut Squash
One of my favorite Fall ingredients is butternut squash. It's incredibly versatile and lends an autumnal, pumpkin-ish flavor to everything from salad to soup to macaroni and cheese. Unlike the seasonal produce of Summer, many cold-weather vegetables can not be enjoyed raw. However, once you know the simple steps to roasting butternut squash you can put it to use in just about anything.
The roasted chunks can be tossed with arugula and white beans. Or, blitz the squash in a food processor and use the puree to make lasagna. Not only are there unlimited ways to cook with roasted squash, there are also plenty of ways to season it. Fresh sage, thyme, or rosemary add an earthiness to the squash, while honey or maple syrup caramelizes the flesh. Doesn't experimenting with different flavorings and preparations sound like fun? To get started, check out my basic recipe for roasted squash.
Instagram Challenge: Holiday Baked Goods

Some of the best gifts you can give — or get for that matter — are homemade treats. Luckily, the cold weather and holiday spirit automatically call for baking, and we plan to take full advantage of it. That's the idea behind our baked chocolate marshmallow crinkle cookies, which we plan to share with family and friends. We suspect it's just one of dozens of sweets that will be changing hands in the next few weeks.
What are you baking this season? Share all your festive treats with us! All you need to do is upload your photos to Instagram and include the hashtag #savorysight in your caption; keep checking back, because you could be featured in a slideshow of our favorite submissions. And make sure to follow YumSugar on Instagram (@heyyumsugar) for mouth-watering inspiration. If Instagram's not your thing, then don't worry: you can still participate by sharing snaps of your holiday sweets in our Savory Sights community group.

But thanks to holiday sales and downright affordable prices, we've rounded up presents for a cook that look like they cost way more. We promise she'll never be able to guess the price tag.
12 Days of Edible Gifts: Garam Masala Popcorn

A few months ago, I tried Cobra Corn Mumbai Masala popcorn, and I couldn't get the Indian spices out of my head. Inspired to create a homemade batch of garam masala popcorn, I knew this unusual popcorn flavor would be appreciated by my family and friends during the holiday season as well.
People usually receive a plethora of indulgent treats as holiday gifts, so I thought it might be nice to keep this batch simple, butter-free, and salty. Garam masala is made of peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, and cardamom, many of which are familiar holiday spices. Keep in mind you can control the heat of the popcorn, but even the most minute sprinkling of cayenne will give it a sufficient kick.

Sixteen cups may seem like a giant yield, but when I pulled out a big bowl of this popcorn for my family of four, I had to pry the bowl away from them so I could save a few cups for the photo shoot! Click here to make this easy, flavor-packed snack.

Quick Tip: Salt Your Grapefruit
Grapefruit, in season September through April, can be extremely bitter, even when it's at the peak of its season and at its juiciest. Some people douse grapefruit in sugar or an artificial sweetener to cut through the tart acidity; however, a sprinkle of salt, although it seems strange, is an effective way to neutralize any acrid flavor.
Try it out at home by cutting the grapefruit into bite-sized wedges, and then sprinkle it with salt (I used fleur de sel). Keep your salted hand at about a two-foot distance, so the salt disperses evenly. As you eat the grapefruit, you'll be amazed that it tastes like grapefruit but without the bitter aftertaste.
From Classic to Funny, 10 Christmas Beer Ads
Coke would like us to believe that it has a hold on Santa and Christmastime, but beer ads around the holidays prove differently. Whether they're vintage posters or more sleek and modern ones, brew ads are just as memorable. Some made us laugh, others were simple and effective — go ahead and see for yourself!
