Today is National Hunger Awareness Day and so I thought I'd tell you about this great book called Hungry Planet: What the World Eats by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio. It's a fascinating coffee table book with portraits of families, surrounded by the food they eat during the course of a week. It's amazingly thought-provoking (compare the Californian family to say, the family in Bhutan or Chad) and wonderfully interesting.

Wow, I can't imagine eating 2 pizzas in one week! Those kids don't look overweight, but judging by the food, they must not be very healthy on the inside.
1There's at least 6 different fast food places in that pic. Eww. And again, where're the veggies?
2Ew this looks terrible!
3That's really gross. The only promising thing I see are the grapes...
4Holy pop and juice! With liquid sugar and fast food, I'd be interested to see the diabetes rates here versus say Chad...
5Boys eat a LOT and their metabolism is sky high. Especially teenagers. Those two pizzas are probably only good for one or two meals a piece.
6
way to instill good nutritional habits in your kids...NOT! WTF
almost $1400 a month for food for a family of 4?..oh snap! fast food is expensive!
7Lets not get crazy judgmental, here. It is only one snapshot, literally, in the life of this family.
8The only healthy choice I could find there are some grapes.
9they are teenage boys, who cares
10i didnt eat healthy then either
It's hard to judge the family based on one picture. It's likely that both parents work and the kids have dozens of after-school activities (they are pretty thin).
All that fast food does make me sad though. It's so easy to give up drive-thrus.
Sometimes, you feel like you only have so much time to put out some food on the table. They need a nutritional counselor to help them plan quick and healthy meals and see that it can be done when there is little free time.
11those takeaways would be for that day, that the photo was taken..they would've all dug in after the shot.
Average tucker I guess...we are all different and have different tastes.
How do your cupboards and fridge look? are you doing any better or are you like the average person?
Let people be themselves!
12this is appalling.
13A sad testament to U.S. diets...
I ate like this as a kid too, no wonder I have weight issues.
