My dad recently found out that he has high cholesterol. He likes to ignore this fact and pretend that he doesn't run a greater risk for heart problems, but me and my mom care about him too much to let it go un-noticed. According to the doctor, my father should cut back on white starches: potatoes, white rice, white pastas, white bread, etc. and eat more vegetables, wheat, and whole grains. This is difficult for dad because he has always been a meat and potato sort of guy, so I've been searching for recipes that are hearty and tasty without all of the starch. I found this recipe for a steak that is served over a crisp green salad and garnished with Parmesan cheese that is sure to please both dad (the steak) and the doctor (the salad). I looked up the name of this dish, tagliata, and in Italian it means cut, cutting, trim, or clip...which is exactly what I want to do with my dad's high cholesterol! Tomorrow afternoon I am hosting my first ever knitting party. In the final moments leading up to one of my parties I always get really nervous. For some strange reason I have this anxious fear before each and every party that no one will come and that the party will be an absolute and total failure. To reduce my irrational, out of control nervousness, I plan as much in advance as possible. I send handmade invites, carefully create a menu with perfectly paired drinks to go with it, and design the decorations all days before my party. The knitting event is no different and the last thing I have to do in my final attempt to reduce pre-party jitters is decide on a playlist. To see what I've compiled, read more
On today's date, January 26, in 1932 William Wrigley Junior died. Now you are most likely asking yourself, who in the hell is William Wrigley Jr.? If you look a little closer at his name you'll realize you do know who he is - he's Wrigley as in Wrigley's Chewing gum. In his honor I'll give you a quick history of his gum company.
At the young age of 13, William started his career as a traveling salesman selling for his father's soap company. Later he continued to sell soap and various other products, one of which offered free chewing gum with purchase. Consumers preferred the chewing gum over the products and he soon started marketing his own chewing gum: Juicy Fruit and Wrigley's Spearmint in 1893. The company evolved and due to his expert knowledge of advertising, it grew to be the largest chewing gum manufacturer in the modern world. Way to go Wrigley!
