Spring has sprung! To celebrate, I'm gathering up some friends, heading to Crissy Field, and having a picnic. Spring is a great time to have a picnic because the weather is warm without being too hot. However, the success of the picnic depends on good weather, so be sure to check out the local forecast when you start to plan. Once the weatherman has given you the go ahead, send the invitations. March happens to be National Noodle Month. To commemorate the celebration, I thought it would be fun to test your noodle knowledge. I've found pictures of a bunch of different kinds of noodles and you have to identify them. Sound fun? Ready, set, go!
I'm sure you had better things to do this weekend, but me, I spent mine on eBay looking at a weird number of state-shaped cornflakes. On Friday night, an Austin-based trivia-company purchased a cornflake shaped like Illinois for $1,350. That's right, Monty Kerr, owner of TriviaMania, spent over a thousand dollars on a single cornflake.
Hoping to cash in on the phenomenon, loads of copycat cornflake auctions cropped up this weekend. There was a heart-shaped cornflake, one shaped like the US, another Illinois-shaped cornflake that also resembles Ben Franklin, an Oregon one, an Africa-shaped one, one shaped like Ohio, and so on. At this time, the Ben Franklin cornflake was actually going for over $400, but Oregon was still cheap.
I don't know about you guys, but I think this is absolutely crazy. I don't understand why you'd buy odd-shaped cornflakes, and yet, I have this strange urge to dump out my box of cereal and see what shapes I can find!
Watch out, if you've purchased any cantaloupe recently you may want to check the sticker. The FDA issued an alert regarding cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano, a Honduran grower and packer. Turns out fruit from them may be linked to a salmonella outbreak. At the time of their alert, 59 people had illnesses linked to the cantaloupes. No deaths have occurred, but 14 people were hospitalized.
If your cantaloupe doesn't have a sticker, you should check with your grocery store to see where their stock comes from. If it turns out to be from Agropecuaria Monteliban, you should toss it out. Better to be safe than sorry!
If you're concerned and would like to learn more, be sure to read the full FDA alert.
This year the folks at the Washington Post put together their second annual Peeps Show. It's a contest they run in which they invite their readers to put together Peeps dioramas. This year they received over 800 entries, and narrowed that down to 31 semi-finalists and one winner. The winner is Laura Sillers, who whipped up a diorama called "The Tomb of King Peepankhamun." It includes Peeps hieroglyphics, a mummified Peep and more.
I've put a few of my favorites below, but be sure to check out all 32 winning entries.
