Come Party With Me: Chinese New Year — The Look

There's just one thing to remember when designing the look for a Chinese New Year party: don't use any white.

There's just one thing to remember when designing the look for a Chinese New Year party: don't use any white. In the Chinese culture, white symbolizes death, while red represents good luck. I'll use lots of red to transform my dining area from everyday to celebration day. You should do the same!

Here's how: start by covering the table with a red cloth. Serve the food on glossy black or silver platters and pour the ginger cocktails into classic old-fashioned glasses. Bring the rice to the table and scoop out portions from a bamboo steamer. In front of each chair, place a small tiger figurine and chopsticks. A bowl of tangerines or oranges is the perfect centerpiece. They signify luck and wealth.

Although there's no customary drink associated with Chinese New Year, I'm serving a potent signature cocktail at my singles-only dinner on Valentine's Day. The flavor profile of the drink? Ginger! It's a key component in a lot of traditional dishes and it highlights the clean flavors of Chinese cuisine. This beverage has a double dose of ginger thanks to an easy homemade ginger syrup and my favorite ginger liqueur, Canton. Vodka is the base spirit, and the resulting libation is smooth, easy to drink, and packs a spicy kick. To serve this at your Chinese New Year celebration get the recipe and read more

Yet another Valentine's Day where I celebrate solo.

Yet another Valentine's Day where I celebrate solo. Instead of being bummed about not having a boy toy, I'm doing what I do best: hosting a dinner party! Luckily, Chinese New Year happens to fall on Valentine's Day, so I'm inviting a select group of single friends to join me for a Chinese-inspired feast. The menu starts with shiitake and scallion lo mein and pork and chive dumplings. Noodles are a staple at Lunar New Year because they symbolize longevity. The main course consists of spicy Sichuan peppercorn shrimp, stir-fried Chinese greens, and steamed white rice. To enjoy these festive and delicious recipes with your loved ones, read more
