Bachelorette Trailer: Kirsten Dunst Throws a Party to Remember

What happens to mean girls when they grow up?

What happens to mean girls when they grow up? Ask Bachelorette's Regan (Kirsten Dunst), Katie (Isla Fisher), and Gena (Lizzy Caplan), a longtime group of friends who are instantly embittered when they find out their fourth wheel, Becky (Rebel Wilson), has gotten engaged. Though it's clear that Regan is overcome with jealousy, she pledges to throw Becky a smashing bachelorette party. Unfortunately, the girls become more focused on recapturing their glory days than showing Becky a good time.

There are so many things I love about this trailer. First of all, Kirsten Dunst's face when Becky tells her she's gotten engaged is priceless and made me choke on my iced coffee a little bit. Second, I've never seen Rebel Wilson in a role that I didn't enjoy and though it looks like she's playing a bit of a straighter character than she did in last year's Bridesmaids, I'm still looking forward to watching her. And third, Lizzy Caplan and Adam Scott together again? Can you say Party Down reunion? Bachelorette hits theaters on Sept. 7, and you can watch the trailer after the jump.

Sundance Snapshot: Bachelorette

There was more than one wedding-themed movie at Sundance this year, and Bachelorette was one of the most buzzed-about. The comedy features a ton of familiar faces, but serves up something a little different from what we've seen in the genre before.

  • Who's behind it? Kirsten Dunst, Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher, and James Marsden lead the funny cast. First-time director Leslye Headland also penned the script.
  • What's it about? A group of high school BFFs reunite for the wedding of their friend Becky (Rebel Wilson). There's uptight, prissy Regan (Dunst), who begrudgingly accepts her role as maid of honor despite her bitterness that her less-attractive friend is getting married before her; cynical Gena (Caplan), who's determined to confront her high school ex (Scott) at the wedding; and ditsy Katie (Fisher), who is actually depressed beneath her bubbly exterior.
  • What did I think? Comparisons to Bridesmaids are inevitable, but the movies really are quite different. For starters, Bachelorette is darker, edgier, and has a lot less slapstick (think coke binges instead of food poisoning). Some of the more dramatic undercurrents go a bit too far, particularly Katie's downward spiral through the course of the night, which don't exactly jive with some of the cheesier, warm-and-fuzzy scenes. Though it's a bit uneven, the stellar cast makes the film entertaining, even if it's not worth a standing ovation.

Kirsten Dunst Gets Support From Her Man Garrett Hedlund For Sundance Bachelorette Premiere

Kirsten Dunst and Lizzy Caplan hit the red carpet together to premiere their female-driven comedy Bachelorette at the Sundance Film Festival last night.

Kirsten Dunst and Lizzy Caplan hit the red carpet together to premiere their female-driven comedy Bachelorette at the Sundance Film Festival last night. The girls stuck together for the arrivals interviews and chatted about their own experiences in friends' bridal parties — though apparently there are no crazy bachelorette stories from their real lives. Kirsten's boyfriend, Garrett Hedlund, snuck in right behind her, skipping the press but supporting his girl. James Marsden joked about how much fun he had playing an "unapologetic douchebag" in the film, which apparently pushes the envelope of the dark wedding comedy. Afterwards, the cast hit up their afterparty at TAO.

Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, and Lizzy Caplan were in matching bridesmaids dresses as they filmed scenes for their new movie Bachelorette in NYC with leading man James Marsden yesterday. James joined the ladies for a day in the park, and the cast looked relaxed between scenes, with Kirsten and Isla even linking arms in their bathrobes and sharing a laugh between takes. Kirsten got straight to work on the new project after her trip to the Toronto Film Festival for a premiere of Melancholia earlier this month. Her costar Alexander Skarsgard was also along for the visit to Canada, and there's a connection between his and Kirsten's latest projects — James! James stars opposite Alexander in Straw Dogs, which hit theaters last weekend, and is now teaming up with Kirsten on their new comedy.

Kirsten Dunst Gives Her Fellow Bachelorette Isla Fisher a Helping Hand on Set

A tipsy-acting Kirsten Dunst and Isla Fisher filmed a scene for Bachelorette in NYC last night. The ladies pretended to be drunk as they left a nightclub and stumbled down the street — Kirsten even held Isla's hair back when her character got sick on the sidewalk! The movie, which also stars a few funny guys like Adam Scott and Kyle Bornheimer, is based on a hit off-Broadway play that follows three friends on the eve of their former high-school classmate's wedding. Isla transitioned to the comic role following a recent stint on the Sydney set of The Great Gatsby, in which she plays Myrtle Wilson. The Baz Luhrmann-helmed adaptation has been shooting Down Under this month, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have also been spotted getting into character as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, respectively.

Come Party With Me: Bachelorette Dinner — The Look

For my girlfriend's bachelorette, we'll be spending the weekend at a house in Calistoga.

For my girlfriend's bachelorette, we'll be spending the weekend at a house in Calistoga. Thus, I'm going to let the natural beauty of the outdoors be the focal point and keep things with the tablescape simple.

A white color scheme looks clean and fresh. The table will be set with white plates, white napkins, and a versatile goblet-style wine glass that can hold white or red wine, or sparkling berry punch. The appetizers — hummus and cheese board — should be placed on a nearby smaller table with the punch bowl.

Candles set the mood and a gorgeous bouquet of vibrantly-colored flowers reminds guests that the occasion is special.
