Shake Things Up: Healthy Premade Cocktail Mixes That Actually Taste Good

A good handmade cocktail is a thing of beauty, but it's not practical when you're hosting a large party, going camping, or heading to the park for a picnic.

A good handmade cocktail is a thing of beauty, but it's not practical when you're hosting a large party, going camping, or heading to the park for a picnic. But let's be honest: most premade mixes are pretty gross. Made largely of high-fructose corn syrup and other unhealthy ingredients, they're an easy way to waste calories — and good liquor. If you can't have it fresh, then choose one of these store-bought cocktail mixes for your next get-together. Whether you want a mojito or a margarita, there's a healthier version for everyone.

Keep Your New Year's Party Simple With Cocktail Mixers

Have a New Year's party at your own house this year?

Have a New Year's party at your own house this year? Playing bartender for the night could mean your work's cut out for you, so instead, make simple cocktail mixers ahead of time, and let your guests mix them with an alcohol of their choice. I've toyed around with a few and come up with three that'd be perfect for New Year's Eve in fresh fruit flavors: cranberry mint, grapefruit basil and pomegranate citrus.
All three of these mixers would marry well with a host of spirits, even sparkling wine. I mixed the cranberry mint in a shaker with rum for a refreshing holiday drink, while I mixed the grapefruit basil with vodka for a more herbaceous version of a salty dog. The pomegranate citrus served as an easy topper to a flute of sparkling wine (for extra flair, float in a few pomegranate seeds, too). I also recommend keeping sparkling water on hand to mix with as a nonalcoholic drink.

Set up a bar before your guests arrive with glasses, buckets of ice, pomegranate seeds, lemon slices and a couple of shakers to ensure your guests and yourself can celebrate into the midnight hour. Mix up your New Year's by reading more for this simple mixers.

Trendspotting: Low-Calorie Cocktail Mixers

Maybe The Cheesecake Factory was on to something with its new skinny cocktail program.

Maybe The Cheesecake Factory was on to something with its new skinny cocktail program. At this year's Winter Fancy Foods Show, it was all about the health-oriented cocktail.

At food expos, cocktail mixers are nothing new, but at this week's show, it seemed like there were few liquid mixers that wasn't a fruit puree touting therapeutic benefits, fewer calories, sugar-free substances, Stevia sweetener, or a low glycemic index.

While the idea's great in theory, too many of these faddy food products were also skinny on taste. What do you think of low-calorie cocktail mixers?

Happy Hour: Modmix Organic Cocktail Mixers

Move over Stirrings, there's a new cocktail mixer on the market and it's made with 100 percent organic fruit juice.

Move over Stirrings, there's a new cocktail mixer on the market and it's made with 100 percent organic fruit juice. Meet Modmix ($9.99), the mixer for the luxury spirit. I was lucky enough to speak with one of the founders, Tricia McCracken, at the Fancy Foods Show. She explained that the mixers pair well with all types of liquor, including bubbly. For a non-alcoholic drink, she suggests diluting the mixer with sparkling water. Modmix comes in six flavors: citrus margarita, French martini, lavender lemon drop, mojito, pomegranate cosmopolitan, and wasabi bloody Mary. Unlike most mixers, Modmix is neither too artificial or too sweet — they taste surprisingly like fresh juice. I loved the French martini, a subtle blend of pineapple juice with a vibrant raspberry color, and the wasabi bloody Mary, a thick tomato juice that packs a spicy punch. The best thing about Modmix is that they have a very pure, intense, authentic fruit flavor. Have you tried Modmix? Did you think it was a step above other cocktail mixers?
