We had purchased two kinds of tempeh from Essene: our regular standby from Lightlife and the Organic Smoky Tempeh Strips. We had tried the latter at a local cafe, so we knew the strips were good. I refuse to call it "Fakin' Bacon" because it's really just tempeh with soy sauce and spices and doesn't taste like bacon at all. Time for TLTs . . . with some H.

I love make homemade hummus, it is so easy and so cheap! But I must admit eating the same flavor each time is a little boring, so inspired by krystles roasted tomato recipe, I baked up some heirloom tomatoes and added them to my finished hummus. The result was simply delicious and I couldn't stop dipping my veggies in it. Here is a basic hummus recipe and you can easily jazz it up with things you have on hand but I highly recommend roasting tomatoes to add.

With all the yummy veggies I'm harvesting from my garden, my go-to lunch has been a veggie sandwich. It seems so healthy since it's like a salad smooshed between two slices of bread, but let's build a sandwich step-by-step and see how many calories it really is.

I grew up eating tuna salad sandwiches, but when I got older, I stopped eating them since they're made with mayo, and not exactly the healthiest lunch option. Then a friend turned me on to this idea: replace the mayo with hummus. Brilliant! It adds a creamy texture and tangy flavor, with much less calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

The Winter Fancy Foods Show, which takes place every January, is always fun to visit after making the year's predictions for foods that'll go mainstream. While both PartySugar and yours truly tasted some stellar new selections, we also got to size up the patterns that will soon hit the food and beverage market. Here are the products that we're betting we'll see more of on supermarket shelves.
Hummus, the popular, pureed garbanzo bean spread, has always been one of my favorite snacks. There's something about its creamy texture that makes it taste far more rich and decadent than it really is. Normally I'll purchase hummus from the store, but recently I remembered how easy it is to make — even when I'm in a hurry!
Use a food processor and canned beans, and you'll have homemade hummus in a matter of minutes. Serve as a dip with carrots and toasted whole wheat pita or, for a more figure-friendly and flavorful condiment, slather on sandwich bread. I know I made a sandwich with eggplant just two weeks ago, but such is the life of a home cook: I had an extra eggplant sitting around that I had to find a use for! So I improvised this totally different — and in my opinion, even more delicious — Greek-inspired sandwich.
Needing to cook the eggplant ASAP, I roasted it on a Sunday and made the sandwich the next day; if you make the eggplant in advance, this simple sandwich comes together in just over five minutes. The slightly sweet, balsamic-roasted eggplant stacks up beautifully next to warm, salty feta. Thin strips of mint and a slather of hummus make it even more complex and rich.
