Pepsi and Frito-Lay Find Permanence in the Past

What's old is new again.

What's old is new again. At the beginning of last year, PepsiCo started an eight-week run of two drinks, Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback, that came in vintage packaging and were free of high-fructose corn syrup. Now, running on the success of those two special-edition drinks, Pepsi has decided to keep the past in its future.

According to Amy Wirtanen, the marketing director for Pepsi Throwback, the drinks will become a permanent part of Pepsi's beverage line. "It's a return to a simpler world," added Shiv Singh, PepsiCo's digital chief. "There's a massive teen trend around simplicity and authenticity."

Nostalgic purchases aren't just big for Pepsi: according to USA Today, yesteryear-inspired fare is blowing up in every segment from sneakers to apparel. Frito-Lay found such success in a 1980s-inspired throwback Doritos Taco Flavor that too will become permanent in the next month. I've always wondered whether the nostalgic items truly take off for their nod to the past, or simply because they're limited-edition menu items. Now, time will tell.

Caffeinated Body Wash: For When Waking Up Is Impossible

Incapable of dragging yourself to the shower in the morning?

Incapable of dragging yourself to the shower in the morning? Then why not make it an energizing, physically addictive experience with this Mountain Dew Caffeinated Shampoo and Body Wash ($16)? Once you become dependent, you'll have to shower (maybe several times) just to feel alive. One 20 ounce bottle has about 530 mg of caffeine in it, which breaks down to about a cup of tea's worth per usage — although it's not clear just how much actually gets absorbed.

On the pro side, if it works, all that transdermal caffeine will definitely hit your bloodstream faster than coffee. Plus, it's a diuretic, so it probably does something for cellulite in the short term. What do you think? Would you be curious to replace your morning chai with this stuff, or do you love showering too much as it is?

Coca-Cola Brings Vault Drink Head to Head With Mtn Dew

Beverage titan Coca-Cola, eager to improve flat sales of carbonated beverage Vault, is hoping to win over consumers with a campaign that employs a tried-and-true tactic: free drinks.

Beverage titan Coca-Cola, eager to improve flat sales of carbonated beverage Vault, is hoping to win over consumers with a campaign that employs a tried-and-true tactic: free drinks.

Although Pepsi-owned (and recently renamed) Mtn Dew carries as much as 80 percent of the market share for citrus soda, Coca-Cola's three-year-old citrus cooler Vault, with four percent of the market share, has fizzled with customers. Hoping to turn the tides for Vault, Coca-Cola will soon begin its "Don't Dew It" campaign.

In an attempt to convert Mtn Dew die-hards into Vault fanatics, the company will be giving away coupons for free 16-ounce, 20-ounce, or 24-ounce Vault drinks when customers purchase a 20-ounce Mtn Dew.

During the economic downturn, consumer coupon use has skyrocketed. Like other recent promotions, industry experts anticipate that the "Vault Taste Challenge," will see a huge participation rate from consumers. Of course, for Coca-Cola, it will come at a price — that of at least a couple million dollars.

Although I think this campaign will be successful, I'm skeptical of Coca-Cola snagging a significant portion of Mtn Dew's market share. I used to be a huge Mtn Dew fan, and Surge, Mellow Yellow, and the others just didn't do it for me. Do you think it will prove to be lucrative?
